Halifax airport CEO hopes for more on-site COVID testing sooner rather than later

Article content HALIFAX The chief executive of Atlantic Canada’s largest airport is hoping for COVID-19 testing for arriving passengers “sooner rather than later,” as an added measure to combat Nova Scotia’s third wave of the pandemic. The Halifax International Airport Authority first proposed the testing system at Stanfield International Airport in January. The current system, which has been used for temporary foreign workers, sends the incoming passengers to a designated area for testing before they leave the building. Halifax airport sees jump in cargo plane traffic

Posted: Apr 19, 2021 6:00 AM AT | Last Updated: April 19 Cargojet is one of the companies that routinely lands at the Halifax airport. (Fasttailwind/Shutterstock) The Halifax Stanfield International Airport is experiencing a jump in air freight traffic, with dozens of additional cargo planes landing at the site last month. During a typical week in the winter only about 25 cargo planes touch down at the airport. But in March, between seven and 10 more airplanes a week arrived, a roughly 30 per cent increase from 2019, said Leah Batstone, a spokesperson for the Halifax International Airport Authority. The increase in cargo traffic has been a bit of good news, said Batstone. The more imports and exports that fly into and out of the province, the more money is brought into local businesses and the airport.

Halifax airport hopes to follow Charlottetown s lead with rapid testing project

HALIFAX Halifax Stanfield International Airport could soon be following the Charlottetown Airport by launching a COVID-19 rapid testing project. The relatively small Charlottetown Airport has been conducting rapid tests on arriving passengers. Staff at the Halifax airport hope to follow suit. We have actually submitted a proposal to the province and public health about how the testing could possibly take place in our facility, said Tiffany Chase, a spokesperson for the Halifax International Airport Authority. As for a timeline, Chase says they are in discussions with public health and could only say she hopes it will move forward soon, but had no exact timeline.
