Former New Brunswick auditor general takes job in Nova Scotia

  HALIFAX Nova Scotia didn’t have to look outside of the Maritimes to find the province’s new auditor general. On Thursday, N.S. Premier Iain Rankin announced the appointment of Kim Adair-MacPherson as the province’s new auditor general. She will become Nova Scotia s first first female auditor general. Adair-MacPherson will replace acting auditor general Terry Spicer, who is retiring March 31. Spicer has been in the position since July 2020, taking over from former auditor general Michael Pickup, who left to become the auditor general in British Columbia. In a statement, Adair-MacPherson said after 36 years of service with New Brunswick’s government, she is taking on an “exciting new opportunity” as auditor general of Nova Scotia.

N L doctor not alone in spreading COVID-19 misinformation, says national association

  ST. JOHN S, N.L. The Canadian Medical Association says a Newfoundland and Labrador doctor sanctioned by his professional order for encouraging people to disobey health orders is among a larger cohort of Canadian doctors spreading COVID-19 misinformation. Instances of doctors spreading falsehoods about COVID-19 are limited but social media platforms provide them a wide audience when it does happen, Anick Losier, spokeswoman for the Canadian Medical Association, said Thursday. Dr. Ann Collins, president of the association, says the spread of misinformation during times of crisis is not new. She said in a statement Thursday that the rise of social media, combined with pandemic-induced isolation, has created something of a perfect storm for false facts and could lead to negative health outcomes.

Paying more at the pumps; gas prices jump across the Maritimes

HALIFAX Maritimers will be paying more at the pumps Friday morning. Gas prices in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island jumped by several cents per litre overnight Thursday. In the Halifax area, regular self-serve gas increased by 6.1 cents overnight to a new minimum price of $1.301 per litre. Diesel is up 3 cents per litre this morning to a new minimum of $1.191 per litre in the Halifax area. Another week, another spike in prices at the pumps: In Nova Scotia, regular self-serve is up 6.1 cents a litre, the minimum price in the Halifax area is now a 130.1 Diesel is up 3 cents, the minimum price is now 119.1@CTVAtlantic@CTVMorningAtl

Maritimes top public health officials look back on first year of pandemic

  HALIFAX One year after the pandemic began, the top public health officials from each of the Maritime provinces looked back and shared their impressions in an interview with CTV Atlantic Anchor Steve Murphy on Thursday evening. New Brunswick s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell, Prince Edward Island s chief public health officer Dr. Heather Morrison, and Nova Scotia s chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang have been the public face of the teams that have been working to develop the guidelines that have kept case totals in the Maritimes so low. Morrison pointed out that the frequency of COVID-19 infections in the rest of Canada has been 2,300 per 100,000 compared to about 200 per 100,000 in the Maritimes
