NBC cancels Golden Globes 2022 broadcast

May 11th, 2021 By David Knox 7 commentsFiled under: News, NBC will not air the Golden Globes in 2022 following ongoing criticism about no black journalists amongst the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. 87 members. “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

HFPA Vows to Add More Black and Racially Diverse Members

Daniel Kaluuya / Twitter The Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. has announced plans to admit 20 new members this year, mostly Black, with a goal of increasing membership by 50 percent over the next two years.   The news comes after the organization’s diversity and inclusion adviser Phillip Berk was curbed after he sent out a racist email to members over the weekend. The email came hours after NBC released a statement expressing concern about the future of the Golden Globes if the HFPA didn’t handle Berk, who served eight terms as HFPA president.  Per Variety, NBC execs have been waiting on the HFPA to reveal a full plan on how to reform the organization, following backlash over a report by the Los Angeles Times that the organization does not have a single Black member. The HFPA now claims it will make significant changes, with plans to include people from “underrepresented groups” to the exclusive group of journalists. HFPA s Diversity Adviser Ousted After Racist Email Controversy

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc. has announced its diversity and inclusion adviser Phillip Berk is no longer a member of the organization after he sent out a racist email to members over the weekend. Berks’ exit also comes in the wake of Ava DuVernay and several publicists calling out the “systemic’ challenges in the group. In the email, Berk criticized Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, calling her “the self-proclaimed ‘trained Marxist.’” He also called BLM a “racist hate movement.” The email came hours after NBC released a statement expressing concern about the future of the Golden Globes if the HFPA didn’t handle Berk, who served eight terms as HFPA president.
