NBC announced Monday that it would not air the Golden Globes in 2022, placing the future of one of Hollywood’s oldest and most-watched award shows in jeopardy amid mounting pressure on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association from studios, actors, and vast swaths of the industry.
Criticism of the HFPA, which hosts the Globes and has been chastised for a lack of diversity and ethical lapses, reached such a fever pitch Monday that Tom Cruise returned his three Globes to the press association’s headquarters.
NBC claims the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is committed to change, despite threats of boycotts from Netflix, Warner Bros., and many Hollywood actors over the inclusiveness of its membership. Shift, on the other hand, cannot arrive soon enough for next year’s Globes.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has reportedly returned his awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that gives out the annual Golden Globe Awards, following outrage over the award-giving body’s lack of diversity.
Multiple media reports in the US said that Cruise, 58, returned the three trophies following criticisms that the HFPA lacks Black journalists as voting members.
The trophies returned were recognition for his films Jerry Maguire and Born On the Fourth of July, Best Actor; and Magnolia, Supporting Actor.
His move came as several stars in Hollywood have criticized the HFPA for its lack of Black representation within the group, which votes on the Golden Globe winners.
