An earlier report noted that
Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) caught major heat in the weeks leading up to the Golden Globes last month after it was revealed that there are zero Black voters among the organization’s 87-strong membership.
The failure to diversify the organization is clearly the reason why Black-led projects received snubs for this year’s Golden Globes.
A Los Angeles Times investigation exposed a lack of Black HFPA and that the organization voted not to hire a diversity consultant. The HFPA confirmed to the outlet that there are no black members but noted it is an issue they’re “committed to addressing.” The group provided no details about how they plan to go about it… until now.

More than 100 Hollywood publicity firms that collectively represent the majority of stars in film and TV said they will advise their clients to skip the Golden Globes if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association does not commit to “transformational change.”
In a letter sent late Monday to the HFPA, the companies said the association, which puts on the Globes, must reform or many of the industry s most prominent actors will boycott its events.
“We call on the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. to swiftly manifest profound and lasting change to eradicate the longstanding exclusionary ethos and pervasive practice of discriminatory behavior, unprofessionalism, ethical impropriety and alleged financial corruption endemic to the HFPA, funded by Dick Clark Productions, MRC, NBCUniversal and Comcast,” the publicists wrote.

Mega-producers Shonda Rhimes and Ava DuVernay on Tuesday called out the “ignorance” and self-dealing of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and suggested the beleaguered organization behind the Golden Globe Awards hampered opportunities for Black creators like them to promote their work to HFPA members.
Rhimes, DuVernay and others like the Black List founder Franklin Leonard responded to a Tuesday report from TheWrap about how the organization rejected studio and network requests for press conferences on multiple Black-led projects, including “Girls Trip,” “Queen & Slim” and Rhimes’ hit Netflix series “Bridgerton” all of which were

2021 Academy Awards nominations: Sticking their heads in the sand
The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced Monday morning. The annual ceremony will be held April 25 at two locations, Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Due to the ongoing pandemic, only presenters, nominees and their guests will be allowed to attend the event. Media coverage has concentrated largely on the greater “diversity” represented by this year’s nominees. As
Variety explained, with an audible sigh of relief, “Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations on Monday, setting an Oscar record for diversity in those categories. … The achievement comes after years of aggressive efforts by the Academy to diversify its membership in the wake of all-white acting nominees for the 2015 and 2016 ceremonies. … This year, thankfully, was quite different.”
