Do you remember when people started using the hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite, where it became very noticeable that people of color weren t being nominated or winning, or even working with the organization? Man, that hit hard to the point, people are taking notice of a lot of organizations with these awards shows. According to Variety, NBC doesn t plan on airing the Golden Globes in 2022 because of controversial issues with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is the nonprofit organization responsible for the awards. Ties have been temporarily cut after controversy surrounding the HFPA s lack of diversity and ethical questions related to financial benefits given to some members were called into question. And it s bad because a lot of major players in the awards space, including Netflix, Amazon and WarnerMedia, said they were all boycotting the Globes until HFPA assured some real change, that including people of color to represent the organization.
HOLLYWOOD RUNS THE GOLDEN GLOBES OUT OF TOWN
Last Friday, NBC-Universal extended hope for a Golden Globes show in January 2022, so long as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association acted swiftly enough to make “meaningful change.” Monday, three days later, the network announced that the 2022 Golden Globe Award show was canceled. It’s an unexpected turn of events reminiscent of the Harvey Weinstein-#MeToo cultural shift in 2017: Promising to turn over a new leaf is meaningless if the industry sees you as a noxious weed.
On May 3, 2021, the HFPA announced plans for a reform package, including a 50% increase in members over the next 18 months with a particular focus on underrepresented groups. NEW YORK Amid growing pressure on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association from studios, stars and large swaths of the film industry, NBC said Monday that will not air the Golden Globes in 2022, putting in doubt the viability of one of Hollywood’s oldest and most-watched award shows.
