In the dark days early in the pandemic, Father Manuel Dorantes was part of a group of young priests asked to be an anointer to give last rites to people dying alone in Chicago hospitals.
Known as Father Manny to his congregants, he estimates he did so for 40 to 50 people one last friendly face before they died. One of those deaths has stayed with him a 52-year-old Latino father, the family s provider, left alone with the priest by an overwhelmed nurse last May.
Father Manny used his phone to FaceTime the man s wife and children so they could pray together and say goodbye. But before getting off the phone, one of his kids asked for the phone to be put by their father s ear.

RNC, NRSC want to join the fight over Floridaâs new election law

The fight is piling up over Floridaâs new election law.
Attorneys for the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) filed a motion to intervene in two lawsuits challenging the measure.
The elections law (
SB 90) was one of the most controversial issues of the Legislative Session, with Democrats and voting-rights groups arguing that it would place undue burdens on voting and would disproportionately harm Black, Hispanic and disabled voters.
A memo filed in the Northern District of Florida argued the court should allow the RNC and the NRSC to join as defendants in the case, using the Democratic Party’s own words from a different voting lawsuit, Issa v. Newsome, which stated âpolitical parties usually have good cause to intervene in disputes over election rules.â

RNC, NRSC join legal fray over Florida s contentious new election law
TALLAHASSEE Republicans are jumping in to defend Florida’s newly adopted election law, which Democrats and an array of voting and civil rights groups are criticizing as unconstitutional.
The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee on Thursday filed motions to intervene in two separate federal lawsuits that have been filed in Tallahassee.
RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, using the same talking point espoused by Florida GOP officials defending the law, said in a statement that “Florida’s recent election reforms are aimed at a simple goal: making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”

Like the others, the suit asks the court to block implementation of the law, claiming it “creates major obstacles to vote-by-mail, curtails access to drop boxes, and criminalizes line warming activities such as providing water to voters.”
“It is an anti-Democracy bill that makes it harder to vote by mail, criminalizes line warming activities… violates free speech rights.denies reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities, said Judith Browne Dianis, executive director of Advancement Project National Office, during a Zoom news conference Tuesday.
Lawsuit explicitly alleges race discrimination
The suit was filed by Advancement Project National Office, Demos, and LatinoJustice PRLDEF on behalf of Florida Rising, Faith in Florida, Equal Ground Education Fund, UnidosUS, the Hispanic Federation and Poder Latinx.
