When I first read the word Latinx, I did what I always do when I hear or read a new word. I looked up the definition. I learned that it’s a newly coined word, a gender-neutral term, used to refer to people of Hispanic or Latin cultural or ethnic identity in the United States. It is used to be more inclusive. It replaces the -a or -o ending in Latino or Latina. After I looked up the definition, I started hearing and reading the word Latinx more often. I also started incorporating the word into my vocabulary and on my radio show.

With that growth has come the emergence of Hispanic Serving Institutions. By definition, Hispanic Serving Institutions – or HSIs – are colleges or universities where Hispanic students comprise at least 25% of the full-time equivalent student body, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Hispanic Serving Institutions must be certified as such by the Department of Education.
