Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt. is caught in a legal dispute with workers at its factory near Chennai, nicknamed the Detroit of India, who say their safety shouldn t be compromised to meet production targets. The workers have also challenged the state s decision to exempt the auto industry from local lockdown rules.

As the storm system Yaas heads towards the north Odisha-West Bengal coast, several thousand people are set to be evacuated from the coastal districts of both States. Covid-19 related labour unrest is slowly brewing in the automobile sector in Tamil Nadu, with workers demanding shutting down of the factories during the lockdown period and maintaining social distancing at work.
On Monday, workers of country s second largest car maker Hyundai Motor India Ltd stopped production demanding closure of the factory as about 750 workers turned Covid-19 positive during April and May.
In the last two months, 750 workers have turned Covid-19 positive. Seven workers have succumbed to coronavirus. Hence today all the workers protested. Initially the management did not agree on factory closure. But when the workers started maintaining social distance at their workstations, production stopped automatically, Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) President E. Muthukumar told IANS.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Monday said it will temporarily suspend operations at its Chennai plant for five days starting Tuesday in view of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions imposed by the Tamil Nadu government.
The Tamil Nadu administration had on Saturday announced extending the ongoing lockdown for another week starting May 24 with more stringent measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Considering the prevailing situation in Tamil Nadu, Hyundai management has decided to temporarily suspend the plant operations for a period of 5 days, starting tomorrow, May 25, 2021 until May 29, 2021.
