Court sides with fired Hyundai plant worker age discrimination lawsuit

A federal judge has ordered an age discrimination lawsuit against the Hyundai plant in Montgomery to proceed to trial, saying the claim has merit and comparing the logic behind the company’s defense to comically doomed cartoon character Wile E. Coyote. James Michael Keller, one of the plant’s original Montgomery employees, sued the company after he was fired from his job as a group leader in the stamping shop, one of 21 workers fired during a 2018 wave of downsizing. All but two of those 21 were older than 40, including Keller, who was 50 at the time. The other group leader in the stamping shop, who was not terminated, was 37, and Keller’s replacement was also 37, according to court records.
