The entire prison population at Parnall Correctional Facility in Jackson will be treated for scabies after the Michigan Department of Corrections declared a facility-wide outbreak on Thursday, a spokesman said.
Prison officials have ordered medication and plan to treat the 1,286 men housed at Parnall by early next week, department spokesman Chris Gautz said Friday.
Gautz said a scabies outbreak was declared for one housing unit on Jan. 22 after several suspected cases were identified. Scabies had spread to at least three more housing units by Thursday, when the department s chief medical officer determined that the entire prison should be placed on outbreak status, he said.

As coronavirus cases continue to surge in the US, a key source of infection is clusters in prisons.
One-in-five prisoners have tested positive for the virus, and at least 1,700 have died, according to recent figures by the Associated Press.
The BBC has obtained telephone recordings of female inmates who are currently incarcerated at Women s Huron Valley Correctional Facility, just outside Detroit.
The women phoned a prison helpline set up by prisoners rights group American Friends Service Committee s Michigan Criminal Justice Program to monitor conditions inside.
The helpline has shared the recordings with us, with the consent of the women who made the phone calls.
Jackson woman’s harsh sentence for involuntary manslaughter must be changed or justified, higher court rules

JACKSON, MI – The harsh sentence given to a Jackson woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter needs to be changed or justified, according to an order from the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Daisha Cooper, 32, was convicted Jan. 14, 2019, by a jury for involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend Ben Johnson on May 8, 2016. The jury was hung on a charge of second-degree murder and agreed on involuntary manslaughter.
This was Cooper’s second trial, after the first jury found Cooper not guilty of first-degree murder and guilty of one count of felony firearms. The case was tried again for second-degree murder.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation, has filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) over allegedly forcing female inmates to remove their hijabs for their ID photos.
The lawsuit comes after more than 15 women claimed they were forced to remove their headscarves for booking photos. The inmates include Muslim women and those belonging to the Moorish Science religious movement.
