FBI warns of plans for nationwide armed protests next week The FBI is warning of plans for armed protests at all 50 state capitals and in Washington, D.C., in the days leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, stoking fears of more bloodshed after last week’s deadly siege at the U.S. Capitol. An internal FBI bulletin warned, as of Sunday, that the nationwide protests may start later this week and extend through Biden’s Jan. 20 inauguration, according to two law enforcement officials who read details of the memo to The Associated Press. Investigators believe some of the people are members of extremist groups, the officials said. The bulletin was first reported by ABC.

Houston opens first free mega site for COVID-19 vaccines This will triple, what we’ve done on any single day, said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. According to Turner, they hadn’t expected to open the mega-site so soon, but Houston’s Health Department received a new shipment of Coronavirus shots late Friday.  As a result, they were able to offer 3,600 COVID-19 vaccines to eligible people on Saturday at Minute Maid Park. We don’t want these vaccines waiting on a shelf, said Turner.  We want to get them out. While the City of Houston continues to slowly receive more doses of COVID-19 vaccines, they hope to receive even more.  On Saturday, city and state leaders both expressed slight frustration.

Houston ISD begins vaccinating school first responders, with teachers up next in rollout plan

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) As the coronavirus vaccine rollout continues, Houston Independent School District is working on a plan to vaccinate its teachers. At Thursday night s board meeting, the district announced that nurses at schools across the district are starting to get their COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccination process started last week, and was specifically for nurses and other school first responders, like campus police officers. Interim Superintendent Granita Lathan says they ve been working closely with the Houston Health Department to coordinate a rollout plan. Right now, school nurses are being trained on how to administer the shot so they can start giving the vaccine to teachers and other school staff when more become available.

HISD resumed face-to-face instruction for families who don’t opt out in October. Houston students who are struggling in online classes may soon be required to return to in-person learning, according to a notice sent to principals this week. In the Jan. 4 memo, administrators with the Houston Independent School District told principals that they can stop remote learning for students who’ve had three or more unexcused absences in a grading period or who have an average grade of 70 or below in their classes. If campuses choose to require those students to return to face-to-face instruction, they have to give their families a two-week notice.

On Wednesday, numerous cars wrapping around the block lined up at Barnett Stadium in southeast Houston for a food giveaway. Houston Independent School District gave thousands of families a week’s worth of food. “It’s been kind of hard since the pandemic hit just trying to keep the fridge stocked,” said Corey Brooks, who came out to get food for his family. “The milk and the meals will help a little bit for my family,” said another woman.
