In her remarks, Hidalgo said of the vaccine, “You just can’t produce them all at once but for now, we have to honor these health care workers, we are glad to see they are protected and for our part to make sure that we don’t continue filling their hospitals, we don’t continue seeing the losses we’ve been seeing, it’s imperative for folks to remember that we are not through with this yet. And while there is hope on the horizon, folks still need to get tested, folks need to cancel gatherings, folks need to make sure and wear their face coverings. We’re going to get through it. We’re all exhausted but we’re nothing if not resilient and so, what a joy to have a cause for celebration this year. Truly we needed that, but let’s keep pushing.”
The eye-popping statistic was uncovered after the health department, in partnership with Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine, analyzed the level of COVID-19 antibodies found in blood samples given by Houston residents from a random sample of 420 local households. Between September 9-18, the health department collected blood samples from 678 willing locals.
“Our results show that an estimated 13.5 percent of Houstonians, which is approximately 250,000 people, had been infected with COVID-19 by September,” said Dr. Loren Hopkins, HHD’s chief environmental science officer.
The human body produces antibodies when a person is infected with the coronavirus, even if that person never shows any symptoms, so detecting antibodies in someone’s blood means that person had COVID-19 in the past, Hopkins explained.

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner attended a news conference addressing the impact COVID-19 has had on the tradeshow industry.
Turner was joined by industry leaders, including president and CEO of Houston First Corporation Michael Heckman to address the current state of the industry and the workers.
The tradeshow industry provides thousands of jobs and helps put billions of dollars into the local economy, but since the start of the pandemic, this industry has been hit hard, Turner said.
