Liberty Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze has hired Curtis to replace Corey Batoon, who left the Flames after one season to become the defensive coordinator at South Alabama. Curtis brings a wealth of coaching experience with him to Liberty that spans more three decades at a variety of schools: Mississippi State (1989-92), Western New Mexico (1993). Northwestern State (1994-2001), Arkansas State (2002-08), Memphis (2009), Central Missouri (2010), Georgia Southern (2011-15) and Tulane (2016-20).

Asa Hutchinson has signed Act 18 of the 93rd General Assembly of Arkansas, which officially makes Henderson State University in Arkadelphia the seventh institution of the Arkansas State University System. Act 18 also expands the ASU System Board of Trustees from five members to seven. The additional members will be appointed by the governor. The transition was previously approved by the Henderson Board of Trustees on Nov. 21, 2019, the ASU System Board of Trustees on Dec. 6, 2019, and the Higher Learning Commission on Nov. 5. Henderson, founded in 1890, will remain a separately accredited institution and becomes the second four-year institution in the ASU System.

Hutchinson signed Act 18, officially adding Henderson State University (HSU) in Arkadelphia to the ASU System. Act 18 also expands the system’s board of trustees from five members to seven. Gov. Hutchinson appointed the following members to the ASU System Board of Trustees: • Paul Rowton, Harrisburg, is the executive vice president of GES Inc., a corporation that owns and operates Edwards Food Giant and Edwards Cash Saver Supermarkets. Rowton is the former president of the ASU Alumni Association, where he served on the board of directors for 14 years. Rowton’s term will expire Jan. 14, 2028.

Hutchinson signed the act on Monday, Feb. 1, which not only finalizes the membership but expands the ASU System Board of Trustees from five members to seven members. The Henderson State University Board of Trustees approved the transition on Nov. 21, 2019. In Nov. 2020, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported, the Higher Learning Commission approved the proposed merger of Henderson State University into the Arkansas State University System.
