Newest public mural in Downtown Henderson blends whimsy with vision

View Comments The latest mural in Downtown Henderson is taking root on a south-facing stucco wall at 19 S. Main St. The creation by artist Grace Henderson features a willow tree with roots embracing and intertwined around an outline of the state of Kentucky, as though a living thing is drawing its life-giving nourishment from the commonwealth. It could be regarded as the most literal of the four public murals created Downtown since 2018. “It is pretty literal,” Henderson agreed, “but it’s also whimsical.” From the branches of the leaning tree will hang nine feathers, an homage to the feather logo that accompanies the community Vision Plan mantra to “Discover Your nature” here.

Rotary Club s grant will help establish art gallery at Welcome Center

In addition to this $10,000 matching grant, the Rotary Club has also announced its annual community grants for 18 projects created by leadership, health education and community service organizations in Henderson. These grants include everything from programming support for Involvement’s juvenile rehabilitation service to support for books to newborns and toddlers through Imagination Library. Because of the pandemic, these organizations will receive their awards now, and a formal recognition program will occur at a Rotary program in the future. The successful grant recipients are: Audubon Kids Zone (AKZ), $1,000 to support food boxes; Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, $1,000 to support weekly scholarships;

Sandy Lee Songfest Now Accepting 2021 Grant Applications

Sandy Lee Songfest Now Accepting 2021 Grant Applications Like so many annual events, organizers of the annual Sandy Lee Watkins Songfest in Henderson were forced to cancel the 2020 edition due to the spread of COVID-19 in the area. The cancellation not only meant we weren t able to enjoy the sounds of several talented songwriters who donate their time to the four day event, it meant the foundation wouldn t be able to donate any money to other Henderson area organizations who needed it. Fortunately, it looks like 2020 will be the exception, not the rule, as the group is currently moving forward with plans to host the event in the summer of 2021.
