McDONOUGH â At a time when the industry was recognizing National Drinking Water Week (May 2-8) and Water Professionals Appreciation Day in Georgia (May 3), the Henry County Water Authority was also celebrating four major industry awards.
The Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) announced the awards recently during its Spring Conference, which is being held virtually through a series of events that conclude on May 20.
From the operations at the treatment facilities to the public education in the community, the HCWA has received GAWP awards for outstanding performances this past year. Those accolades included:

Strong Rock Middle School student Brody Spann was among the winners for his essay Water Machinist.
Students were asked to write a 300-500 word essay focusing on how safe water is more important than ever during a pandemic; or, research and write about an essential job of a water professional. Of the 650 entries received, one winner per county was chosen. Each winner received a $100 check and an award certificate from the Metro Water District. As Henry County s winner, Spann received an additional gift card and swag from the Henry County Water Authority.
âHats off to this yearâs essay contest participants,â said Glenn Page, Metro Water District chairman. âTheir work demonstrates an understanding that safe, clean water is absolutely essential for the public health and safety of us all, and that itâs the critical work of water professionals region-wide that ensures our continued access to this vital resource.â

She said that s why a visit from the Youth Leadership Henry s to the Henry County Water Authority s Cubihatcha Outdoor Education Center was so important on March 20.
As the Environmental Compliance coordinator for the HCWA, Sanders is at the forefront of the utilityâs public education and outreach efforts. She and members of the Cubihatcha staff provided students with an in-depth overview of how the authority provides the community with clean, safe drinking water and sewer collection and treatment services. The students also received insights on what career opportunities might be available to them in the water industry.

During the trip to Newnan, Harrell drove through the parts of the city that were devastated from tornado damage. She said that the tornado destroyed or damaged more than 1,700 homes there.
âHenry County is proud to collaborate with American Legion Post 516 and the community to help our neighbors in Newnan who were so horribly affected by the recent tornado. I want to thank everyone who donated water, supplies and time to this relief effort,â said Harrell.
