UMATILLA COUNTY — As schools have returned to in-person classes in the spring, the Oregon Health Authority has started to record small outbreaks of COVID-19 among students across Umatilla County.
Avenue of Flags is returning to the
Hermiston Cemetery for Memorial Day weekend. The display, featuring hundreds of flags, will be erected Friday and remain through Memorial Day â Monday, May 31. The cemetery is open from daylight to dusk.
In addition, a Memorial Day ceremony is planned Monday at 10 a.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery. The program includes
American Legion Post 37, the
Oregon National Guard and music provided by the
Hermiston High School band and choral groups.
Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, as seating is not provided. In addition, COVID-19 guidelines are suggested.

The program will take place June 21 to July 31 (except July 5), Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
According to an announcement from the school district, the academic portion of the day will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. with math, literacy and science activities, plus field trips and swimming lessons. Afterward students will have the option of participating in sports, attending the Champions daycare or going home for the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided free on site and transportation to and from the program is also available.

HERMISTON â Two new faces will be joining the Hermiston Board of Education and two incumbents kept their seats in the May 18 election.
According to results posted by the Umatilla County Elections Division after 10 p.m. on May 18, incumbent Brent Pitney was defeated by Sally Anderson Hansell.
Pitney, who works for Knerr Construction, was appointed to the board in 2018. He garnered 36.7% of the 2,843 votes cast. Anderson Hansell, an attorney at Anderson Hansell PC, received 63%.
She described herself as âdeeply humbledâ by the results, and said she looks forward to learning more about what is going on in Hermiston schools.
âI think the election tells me that the community is looking forward to more and better communication from the board and administrators, as well as enhanced transparency as far as decisions go, and the reasons for those decisions,â she said.
