3 ATLANTIC OCEAN – The Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWOARG) and the embarked 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) reached a new milestone of 90 days underway with zero COVID-19 cases since the beginning of their deployment, May 21, 2021. The safety of our Sailors and Marines is a top priority and preventing COVID-19 is one way to keep our personnel safe and fully mission capable, said Capt. Darren Nelson, commodore, Amphibious Squadron Four. By maintaining high mission readiness we are able to consistently support our partners and allies.
The roughly 4,300 Sailors and Marines of the IWOARG and 24th MEU have participated in several NATO exercises, bi-lateral exercises, distinguished visitor visits, and ports of call during this 90 day period. In addition, Sailors and Marines are stationed at shore locations throughout the SIXTH Fleet area of operations. There have been zero cases of COVID-19 during this time.

Theodore Roosevelt(CVN-71) pulled into its berth at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., on Tuesday morning, completing its second overseas deployment in 16 months.
The carrier, flagship for the Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, had left San Diego in October 2020 for a final set of pre-deployment training exercises before officially beginning deployment operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet and 3rd Fleet regions. SANTO DOMINGO The Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Wichita (LCS 13) with embarked U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 402 seized an estimated $12 million in suspected drugs, May 1.
3 APRA HARBOR, Guam (May 21, 2021) A Columbus, Ohio, native and 2018 Westland High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the deployed Independence-variant littoral combat ship (LCS) USS Charleston (LCS 18).
Airman Elisa Morales joined the Navy as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate shortly after graduating high school and is a member of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 21, which is currently assigned to the Charleston.
“My older brother was in the National Guard, and I definitely knew I wanted to do some form of military so I could go to college,” said Morales. “My mentor told me about how I could travel and do interesting things in the Navy as well as go to college after, so I started looking into it.”
