COVID-19 DEATHS RISE SLIGHTLY AS BANK HOLIDAY SLOWS REGISTRATIONS
Weekly registrations of deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales have risen slightly, new figures show - but the numbers are likely to have been affected by the early May bank holiday.
A total of 151 deaths registered in the week ending May 14 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
This is up from 129 in the previous week - a rise of 17%.
Many register offices will have been closed for the bank holiday on May 3, however.
This is likely to have led to fewer deaths being registered in that week and slightly more deaths being registered in the following week.
A significant number of dentists are threatening to reduce their NHS commitment and expand their private work due to pressures imposed by the pandemic.
A new poll of dentists found that almost half (47%) said they were “likely” or “extremely likely” to “reduce their NHS commitment”.
Meanwhile 30% said they were minded to “go fully private”, according to a poll by the British Dental Association (BDA).
The BDA warned that dentists are facing severe pressure as a result of the pandemic, with almost half (47%) saying they are considering retiring early or may change career due to current pressures.
It has estimated that 30 million appointments have been “lost” due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous added: “There has been an underlying problem with dentistry in the Lowestoft and Waveney area for a long time.
“Practices have difficulty recruiting and retaining dentists, this situation has been exacerbated by a lack of funding with net government spending on general practice reduced by a third over the past decade.
“It has reached crisis point, partly due to Covid, but due to two dental practice closures in Lowestoft. I propose high capacity ventilators so that dentists can reopen and in the long-term getting more training places in the area like a dentist school nearby in Norwich and replacement of the current NHS contract by April 2022.
VACCINATED Brits will still have to self-isolate for ten days after coming into contact with someone with Covid-19 after restrictions lift.
According to the Telegraph, the rule will remain in place even after June 21, when the Government aims to axe all Covid restrictions.
It comes as Brits were urged NOT to jet off to amber list countries, including Spain, after the nation today opened its borders to visitors.
Meanwhile, the coronavirus pandemic will be declared OVER if it’s proven vaccines have stopped hospital admissions rising, a top Oxford jab doctor has claimed.
