The Ensus refinery at Wilton, Redcar A SHIFT to a new, lower emission petrol set to be rolled out across the UK will secure jobs at the North-East biofuel plant where it will be produced, the Government has announced. The planned introduction of E10 fuel at petrol stations in September is expected to boost the Government’s ambitions to reach net zero by 2050. E10 is a mixture of petrol and ethanol made from materials including low grade grains, sugars and waste wood – and could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year. That’s the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road – or all the cars in North Yorkshire.
Teesside Wind Farm near the mouth of the River Tees SIX projects across the UK will today receive a share of £8 million in Government funding as part of a drive to create the world’s first net-zero emissions industrial zone by 2040. The funding will be used to develop ways to cut carbon emissions from major industries – helping safeguard the thousands of jobs that depend on the chemical and process sector in Teesside. The new cash is the latest phase of the Government’s £170 million Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge which has the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs. The announcement is the latest boost to the region as it pushes ahead with key projects that will help the Government meet its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
