Bharat Biotech to make antigen for first-ever anti-malaria vaccine

Hyderbad, Jan 27 : Global healthcare company GSK, non-profit agency working to end health inequity PATH, and vaccine maker Bharat Biotech on Wednesday announced the signing of a product transfer agreement for malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS01E1.
The agreement includes the transfer of manufacturing of the RTS,S antigen part of the vaccine and the grant of a license on all rights pertaining to the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine to Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Ltd (BBIL). GSK will retain the production of the adjuvant of the vaccine (AS01E) and will supply it to Bharat Biotech.

When a senior technical team from Russia’s health ministry descended on Hyderabad in November 2020, nobody knew that it was breaking an emerging oligopoly in the Indian market, quietly but decisively. The manufacturing of the Covid-19 vaccine wasn’t meant to be restricted to a few.
After auditing several facilities across the country, the Russian team chose three companies from Hyderabad, to undertake clinical trials for its Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, in India and contract-manufacture the vaccine Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hetero Biopharma, and Virchow Biotech.

As India entered the fourth day of covid-19 vaccination on Tuesday, the vaccine uptake remained low across states. Major vaccine hesitancy prevailed in states such as Punjab with only 27.9% beneficiaries turning up for vaccines followed by Puducherry with 34.6% and Tamil Nadu with only 34.9% healthcare workers and frontline workers opting for covid-19 vaccines.

At least 447 people reported adverse effects after receiving covid-19 vaccination, with the majority complaining of fever, headache, and nausea, according to the provisional data released on Sunday.
These are classed as adverse event following immunization (AEFI) and may not necessarily be related to the vaccine or the vaccination process.
