BSL-3 labs are used in the case of clinical or diagnostic research where the personnel work with agents that may cause a serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation and/or where the agent being worked on has the potential to contaminate the environment.
Those companies which will manufacture Covaxin in India need to have such labs to begin with.
The Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, which developed the Covid-19 jab Covaxin, is willing to share the formula of its vaccine with other manufacturers to increase production, said NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul on 13 May.

Bharat Biotech set to produce vaccines at new Pune facility
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said the State must be given preference in terms of vaccine supply after Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech fulfils its commitment to the Centre of delivering Covaxin stocks that would be rolled out in the firm’s new Pune facility in three months.
Mr. Pawar, who reviewed the COVID-19 situation in Pune on Friday, expressed hope that the firm would supply the vaccine to the State after it had fulfilled its delivery quota to the Centre.

New Delhi: India added 3.43 lakh fresh COVID-19 cases today amid growing concerns of patients contracting a deadly fungal infection. The death count has touched 2,62,317 lakh with 4,000 people dying of the infection.

India currently has 37.04 lakh active cases and they account for 15.65 per cent of the country s total infections. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana cumulatively account for 79.67 per cent of the total active cases.
Nearly 18 crore people have been vaccinated so far, according to the Health Ministry. Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh account for 66.73 per cent of the cumulative doses, the ministry said.
