THE new year has begun on a positive note with two vaccines against Covid-19 getting emergency use approval from the Subject Expert Committee of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). Covishield (Oxford University-AstraZeneca) is being manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), while Covaxin is being made by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech. India reached the tally of one crore Covid-19 cases and 1.5 lakh deaths earlier this month, while the total cases across the world have crossed 9 crore in the past 12 months since the pandemic began.
Covaxin has been developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech.

As India s vaccination drive began today with Covid shots to health workers, those receiving Bharat Biotech s Covaxin were asked to sign consent forms that assured compensation if any adverse effect was found linked to the vaccine.
Only recipients of Covaxin have to sign a consent form before being vaccinated because its use has been allowed by the government in clinical trial mode . Among those who received the shot after signing the form were AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria, vaccine committee chief and NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul and his wife Dr Shashi Paul, a scientist.

Amaravati, Jan 16 : A health department sweeper received the first shot of the coronavirus vaccine in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. Health department sweeper B. Pushpa Kumari took the first shot of coronavirus vaccine in the state, said an official statement.
Kumari was administered the vaccine shot at Government General Hospital in Vijayawada.
The Andhra Pradesh government has identified 332 locations in the state to launch the coronavirus vaccination programme, as part of Saturday s nationwide mega rollout of the vaccine.
Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan addressed the media after Day 1 of India s vaccination drive

Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan expressed tremendous relief Saturday evening on conclusion of Day 1 of India s nationwide Covid vaccination drive - which began a little after 11 am and saw 1,65,714 people vaccinated across 3,351 sites in the country. The Health Ministry stressed that there had been no case of post-vaccine hospitalisation due to adverse side effects.
