This week in 1890, the Highland News reported that commencement exercises were conducted at the New Lexington High School (current location of Highland, Ohio), and “four more of our young people have launched their barks out upon the stream of life.”

Conrad Ashling Curren Conrad Ashling Curren, 87, of Greenfield passed away Saturday, May 15, 2021 at home. He was born April 26, 1934, in Wilmington, the son of Walter P. and Louise (Ashling) Curren. Conrad graduated from Greenfield McClain in 1954. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in history. After that, he earned his law degree, also from UC. Upon graduation, Conrad entered the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and was stationed in Sault Saint Marie Michigan with the JAG (Judge Advocate General). Upon completing his active-duty service, Conrad continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve, achieving the rank of captain.

Judge sends man to prison By Tim Colliver - tcolliver@aimmediamidwest.com A Texas man entered a plea of guilty to a third-degree felony charge of aggravated vehicular homicide Monday in Highland County Common Pleas Court. Daniel Martinez, 31, Crystal City, Texas received a 30-month prison sentence from Judge Rocky Coss and in so doing, court documents said that a second count of aggravated vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony, was dismissed. His guilty plea, conviction and sentencing was in connection with an incident described in the July 2020 indictment from a Highland County grand jury. The indictment said that on Nov. 1, 2019, while “operating or participating in the operation of a motor vehicle,” described as a Chevrolet Impala, Martinez caused the death of Cody Spencer recklessly.

The 18-month prison sentence that Alicia M. Ralston, 32, Chillicothe, could have received on the complicity to escape conviction was suspended by Hogan, with instructions in the courts conditions of supervision ordering that she continue in her efforts to obtain her GED, and successfully complete substance abuse disorder treatment through the Georgia Harris house and all recommended aftercare.
