Three London high school students have been awarded $5,000 scholarships for showing strength and perseverance in the face of adversity.
The awards, named after 19
th century novelist Horatio Alger, whose work often featured young men in poverty, were awarded to Alishba Farrukh of Sir Frederick Banting secondary school, Yihua Liu of London Central secondary school and Makela Dew of H. B. Beal secondary school.

The trio are among 160 students from across the country who were awarded scholarships from the Horatio Alger Association of Canada.

Aicha Barry need not look far for inspiration as she embarks on her post-secondary career.
Her mother, Salma, not has only raised her as a single parent, but has also redoubled efforts to meet her own scholarly objectives and is attending college, with plans to go to university.

âMy mom works really, really hard,â said Aicha Barry, 17. âI donât know how she does it. I will see her in the dining room, working on her homework while making dinner. She has such resilience and determination to achieve her goals, even after all these years.
