Hoboken loses two more residents to COVID-19

× Mayor Ravi Bhalla said he hopes more providers will get access to the vaccine in the coming months. The Hoboken Health Department reported two more deaths due to COVID-19. They were two women in their 80s. “I extend my best wishes and deepest sympathies to their family members and loved ones during this extraordinarily difficult time,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla in a Nixle alert to residents. This brings Hoboken’s total COVID-19-related deaths to 37 since the pandemic began. Hoboken has had 2,082 residents test positive for the virus, and 32 new cases were reported on Jan. 5. Hoboken University Medical Center is currently treating 29 COVID-19 patients, which includes 10 Hoboken residents.

California-based investment group KPC Global Management has signed a letter of intent with CarePoint Health to purchase the operations of Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital in Jersey City, the two entities announced Wednesday. The announcement is the latest twist in the years-long saga of Hudson County’s three CarePoint hospitals, and could herald the arrival of a major new player in the dizzying tug-of-war over the hospitals.

Hudson County View Several North Bergen-based organizations made Christmas donations today for a family reeling from tragedy this year after Estefania Mesa fell into a coma while giving birth at the Hoboken University Medical Center this summer. “Estefania can’t be with us right now at the moment, but when gets up again, starts walking and talking, when she’s strong, I’ll let her know all the good stuff you guys have done. Thank you so much,” said Eduardo Argueta, the partner of Mesa, who brought their five-month old daughter Emma to Township Hall this afternoon. Mesa gave birth to Emma via Cesarean section on July 20th, and according to Argueta, the new mother went without oxygen for over nine minutes, leaving her with brain damage.

Hudson Reporter Hoboken healthcare workers get vaccine × Hoboken resident Dr. John Rimmer received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at Hoboken University Medical Center. Officials at Hoboken University Medical Center (HUMC) administered the first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare workers at the hospital this week. Dr. John Rimmer, director of the emergency department and Hoboken resident, along with Dinorah Vargas, an Intensive Care Unit employee, were among the first to receive the vaccine. HUMC has received an initial 100 vaccines which will be administered to their employees during the first phase of vaccine distribution. Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla called the vaccination a milestone and an important first step.
