A Mt. Airy man allegedly shot at the windshield of an armored police car on Thursday as officers approached to serve a search warrant on his home.
Police have charged Karl Tomanek, 34, of the 1100 block of Shaffersville Road, with attempted first-degree murder and numerous gun charges. He remains held without bond at Howard County Detention Center.
Police had identified Tomanek as a suspect in an April burglary. When police approached, Tomanek came out with a shotgun and fired two shots at the driver. Bulletproof glass protected the officer. Rather than return fire, police gave immediate verbal commands and took him into custody, police said.
