WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The New Hanover County Board of Education on Wednesday voted to delay the transition to in-person instruction (Plan A) at the district’s elementary schools.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the board voted 6-1, with Nelson Beaulieu being the lone dissenting vote, for elementary students to remain in remote-only learning until at least Jan. 25, when the district will move into Plan B a combination of in-person and remote learning.

At Tuesday night’s New Hanover County School Board meeting, the announcement came that school staff will be vaccinated in Phase 1B. There were also concerns from some community members about the impending elementary reopening.
There were twenty ‘Calls to the Audience’, from community members who shared public comments with the board. And most asked officials to reconsider their decision to fully reopen pre-K through elementary schools on January 19th. Some also mentioned recent fatalities from Covid-19 among educators and asked for documentation on the county’s risk assessment for reopening.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The New Hanover County Association of Educators is calling for greater social distancing and other measures to ensure safety before the district reopens elementary schools for full time in person instruction Jan. 19.
During a press conference on New Year’s Eve, President Amanda White said, “we are at the height of a pandemic and we understand everybody wants children back in schools. We want children back in schools as well.”
