By the Numbers: Covid-19 updates in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender for week of May 17

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ dashboard, the numbers keep dropping in North Carolina as Covid cases decline and vaccines slowly creep up. Of the 10.49 million population in North Carolina, 37.5% is fully vaccinated, with 41.8% partially vaccinated. The 65-and-older population have reached 75% full vaccination compared to 47.4% of the 18-to-64 population. There are 995,754 Covid-19 cases in the state, and hospitalizations continue a downward trek from 815 to 763, with 12,958 deaths since Covid began. Newly reported cases have gone up since last week from 688 to 1,020. The state’s percent positivity fell from 4.7% to 3.4%. Lawsuit: Armed mob, former deputy, attempted to invade NC home

PENDER COUNTY — A Rocky Point, N.C. mother and son have filed a lawsuit against 15 people, including a now-former New Hanover County Sheriff s deputy, who they allege attempted to invade their home last year. The lawsuit, which lists Monica and Dameon Shepard as plaintiffs, alleges that a mob of known and unknown white residents led by then-New Hanover County Sheriff s Deputy Jordan Kita attempted to forcibly enter the Shepards home in Rocky Point on May 3, 2020. Kita was wearing his official New Hanover County Sheriff s Department uniform at the time and carrying his official sidearm, according to the lawsuit and comments at a press conference in May 2020 made by District Attorney Ben David.

Moving vehicle shot at on North College Road Sunday, driver injured

Javante McAllister-Sanders mugshot NEW HANOVER COUNTY The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a moving vehicle on North College Road was shot at multiple times Sunday evening. According to a news release, the vehicle was hit with gunshots several times just after 6 p.m. Once the struck car was located, the driver, Edward Wilson, was found with a bullet wound in his leg and forehead. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. A juvenile was also in the car. Officers witnessed the minor discard a 9mm handgun as well as a “small amount” of marijuana in close-by bushes. The passenger was taken to the juvenile detention center.

New Hanover Sheriff s Office investigate College Road shooting

The New Hanover County Sheriff s Office is investigating a shooting that left one man wounded Sunday night.   According to the sheriff s office, a vehicle traveling on College Road was hit several times by gunshots after 6 p.m. Sunday.  Edward Wilson, the driver, was found with a gunshot wound to his leg as well as a bullet wound to his forehead. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released.  A juvenile passenger in the car, who was transported to the juvenile detention center, was allegedly seen getting rid of a 9 mm handgun as well as a small amount of marijuana in bushes nearby.
