On Tuesday, local officials responded to urging by state and federal authorities to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. While New Hanover County vaccination sites have not been affected, UNCW s did pause its campus clinic until further notice.
New Hanover County received the recommendation on Tuesday morning from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine out of an abundance of caution, while the CDC and FDA review rare cases of blood clots as a result of the vaccine.

The nation’s massive vaccination effort hit a snag Tuesday when, citing safety concerns, two federal health agencies called for a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
Officials at the CDC and FDA are reviewing six cases in which a rare and severe type of blood clot developed after the person received the J&J vaccine, which, unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, requires only one dose.

NEW HANOVER, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County reported no additional deaths from COVID-19 over the past week despite 415 new cases being reported. To date, 17,772 people have tested positive for the virus in NHC and 163 people have died.
No increase in the number of deaths from COVID-19 over the past week marks the first seven-day period since October 23, 2020, that no additional deaths from the virus were reported of county residents.
