Büyükçekmece, İstanbul'un batısında bulunan bir ilçesidir.
Doğusunda Beylikdüzü ve Esenyurt, batısında Silivri, kuzeyinde Çatalca ve Arnavutköy ilçeleriyle güneyde Marmara Deniziyle çevrilmiştir.
Yüzölçümü 196 km²'dir.
1987'ye kadar Çatalca'ya bağlı bucak merkeziyken ilçe olmuş ve 2009'daki idari yapılanma değişikliklerine kadar Avcılar ve Küçükçekmece ilçelerine komşu olmuştur.
Bu yılda yapılan değişikliklerde Gürpınar, Beylikdüzü (eskiden Kavaklı) ve Yakuplu beldeleri Beylikdüzü; Esenyurt ve Kıraç beldeleri Esenyurt; Bahçeşehir beldesi de Başakşehir ilçelerine bağlanınca ilçenin alanı büyük ölçüde küçülmüş, yalnız lağvedilen Çatalca'nın Muratbey ve Silivri'nin Celaliye-Kamiloba beldelerinin katılımıyla batı yönünde ilçe genişlemiştir.
Ayrıca lağvedilen Tepecik, Mimarsinan ve Kumburgaz beldelerinin mahalleleri de Büyükçekmece Belediyesi sınırlarına katılmıştır.Büyükçekmece'de Türkiye'nin 1., Avrupa'nın 3.
