Environmental problems and issues require the concerted efforts of experts from not just one but several disciplines.
Whether it be issues of biodiversity conservation, habitat loss and pollution or developing strategies for sustainable development, or rehabilitation of displaced people due to developmental activities, it is increasingly being realized that best results are achieved if the problems are addressed from an inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary perspective.
Recognizing the need for this, the School of Environmental Studies was established in 2001 in the University of Delhi, Delhi, India to act as an umbrella organization to coordinate the activities of its constituents viz.
Department of Environmental Biology, Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE), and Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Mountain & Hill Environment (CISMHE).In 2011 it was renamed as Department of environmental studies and environmental biology was discontinued.
