The Great Himalayan National Park comprised an area of 754 sq km when constituted in 1984 and was declared a park in 1999 to save the endangered wildlife species of this Western Himalayan ecosystem.
Looking at the ecological diversity and its significance an Ecozone area and two Wildlife Sanctuaries (Sainj & Tirthan) were created on the edges of GHNP in the next phase.
