In 1987 Headway North West was established by family and friends following a serious motor vehicle accident involving several members of the same family..
Over the years these people were and still are the genesis of Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
This group of committed people visited families in hospital, sat and educated people with an Acquired Brain Injury [ABI], and spoke to community groups about the many issues impacting on people with an ABI.
The organisation was supported by voluntary staff working in spartan conditions with a small amount of funding accessed through Motor Accident Insurance Board [MAIB], and having to exist with very few material resources..

as a stand-alone service was formally established as an incorporated entity in May 1999, as a response to a deficiency in the available community services for people with an ABI.
This in part was a result of a change in direction to the regionalisation of specialist services.
Prior to the establishment of Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
long-term support in the North West was achieved primarily through the work of a local support group collectively known as Headway North West..

In August 1999 the Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS] released a report entitled 'Review of Funded Services for People with Acquired Brain Injury'.
It was clear from the report that at this time the Department did not provide any funding in the North West for any specialist service for people with an ABI.
The report identified a number of recommendations including the need to provide ongoing and reliable funding to a number of specialist services providing support to people with an ABI..

In September 1999, the Evaluation and Development Unit of Disability Services contacted the Association and talked about our first funding agreement with Health and Human services.
This was for an historic but small amount of funding to Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
which with the funding from MAIB was to become the seeding grant for the Association.
There were eighteen recommendations in all some of which have been implemented and others rejected for one reason or another.
During the development of the report Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
applied for Incorporation status.
In late 1999 the DHHD through Disability Services finally committed to provide funding on an ongoing basis for one paid position in the North West along with some infrastructure costs.
Our first paid employee commenced duty on the 13th of March 2000, and in April of 2000 Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
relocated to Wilson Street, Burnie.

Over the past eight years Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
has continued to evolve and refine its direction and build on the level of professionalism and knowledge within the service.
In the past eight years we have firmly established ourselves as the only specialist unit supporting people with an ABI on the North West and West Coast of Tasmania.
Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
currently offers the Community Support Program for people with an ABI, family, friends, and stakeholders Program and Children with an ABI Program, and the Education and Community information Program.

received funding through the Charities Committee of the MAIB, and funded from the DHHS through Disability Services.
Funding from either source was not sufficient to support the activities of the Association given the demand and the number of people in the North West with diagnosed and an undiagnosed brain injury.
This funding did however enabled Headway North West Tasmania Inc.
to offer a quality support option for this very marginalised group, and their carers.
