Detailed description is Herzlich Willkommen auf der offiziellen Facebook-Seite des Instituts für Strukturmechanik und Leichtbau der RWTH Aachen Universität.
Das Institut für Leichtbau wurde 1955 von Herrn Professor Dr.-Ing.
Hans Ebner gegründet und von ihm als Institutsdirektor bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1968 geleitet.
Er gab dem Leichtbau durch seine Schubfeldtheorie neue Impulse.
Sein Nachfolger war Professor Dr.-Ing.
Joachim Kowalewski, der ebenfalls von der Deutschen Versuchsanstalt für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DVL), Institut für Festigkeit, kam und das Institut für Leichtbau 1969 übernahm.
1977 wurde Herr Professor Dr.-Ing.
Huba Öry zum Institutsdirektor bestellt.
Er erweiterte die bisherigen Forschungsschwerpunkte des Institutes: Bauwerksdynamik und -aerodynamik, Kraftwerkstechnik und Anlagenbau um Themen zur Konstruktion und Untersuchung von Windkraftanlagen (Rotordynamik, Aerodynamik und Strukturauslegung), Rotorblättern für Kühltürme aus GFK, Rohrleitungen im Anlagenbau sowie Strukturauslegung im Raumfahrzeugbau.
Herr Professor Öry war maßgeblich am Aufbau der Raumfahrt in Deutschland beteiligt, zählte zu den international anerkannten Experten auf dem Gebiet des Leichtbaus und er leitete das Institut bis zu seiner Emeritierung.
Sein Nachfolger, Herr Professor Dr.-Ing.
Hans-Günther Reimerdes übernahm Lehrstuhl und Institut für Leichtbau 1992.
Unter seiner Leitung wurde ein breites Spektrum wissenschaftlicher Projekte zum Leichtbau mit Schwerpunkt in der Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik bearbeitet, deren Ergebnisse u.a.
in das Handbuch der Raumfahrt einflossen.
Herr Professor Reimerdes ist ein international anerkannter Experte und gefragter Gutachter auf dem Gebiet vieler Leichtbaufragen und u.a.
für Maßnahmen zur Verhinderung/ Verminderung von Schäden an Raumfahrzeugen durch Mikrometeoriten und Weltraummüll..

Seit August 2014 ist Herr Professor Schröder Institutsleiter.
Mit ihm wurden Forschungsschwerpunkte und Lehre um den Bereich Strukturmechanik erweitert.
Diese fachliche Erweiterung wurde auch namentlich festgehalten: Institut für Strukturmechanik und Leichtbau (SLA).
