O LMTA é a sede do grupo de pesquisa “Mecânica Teórica e Aplicada”, formados por pesquisadores de diferentes instituições nacionais e cadastrado no Diretório dos Grupos de Pesquisa do CNPq.
A proposta básica é a de usar os componentes do LMTA como elementos de ligação entre diferentes especialistas (Engenharia Mecânica, Ciências dos Materiais, Engenharia Civil, Engenharia Química, Informática, Física, Matemática) que, normalmente, não convivem entre si e que raramente desenvolvem trabalhos em conjunto.
