Das Institut betreibt in erster Linie Grundlagenforschung im Fach der Naturwissenschaften auf dem Gebiet der Festkörperphysik und der Materialwissenschaft.GeschichteDas Institut wurde ursprünglich im Jahr 1960 unter Heinz Bethge als Institut für Festkörperphysik und Elektronenmikroskopie der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR gegründet.Aufgrund einer im Jahr 1991 ausgesprochenen Empfehlung des Wissenschaftsrats, das wissenschaftliche Potenzial des Instituts teilweise weiter zu nutzen, nahm das Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik als erstes Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in den neuen Bundesländern am 1.
Januar 1992 seine Arbeit auf.
Der Institutsneubau wurde 1997 eingeweiht.Aufgaben des InstitutsDas Institut gehört zur Chemisch-Physikalisch-Technisch-Sektion der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.Die Arbeiten im Institut werden in zwei experimentellen Abteilungen (Leiter der Abteilung 1 ist Jürgen Kirschner, Leiter der Abteilung 2 ist (seit 2014) Stuart Parkin) und in einer theoretischen Abteilung (Leiter Eberhard Gross) durchgeführt.
Die Forschungstätigkeit betrifft vorwiegend die Besonderheiten der Bildung und der Eigenschaften von Mikro- und Nanofestkörperstrukturen sowohl in der Grundlagen- als auch in der angewandten Forschung.
Nach dem Tod von Ulrich Gösele im Jahr 2009 war der Potsdamer Physiker Peter Fratzl kommissarischer Leiter einer Abteilung.
