After being rebuilt from Cyclone Althea in 1971, the hotel was cruising along as your typical Queensland pub, you know…lazy Sunday sessions, crocodiles out the back (we’re not joking!) and majestic views of the historic Jetty and Cleveland Bay.

A family-run business, the Picnic Bay Hotel is the heart of Picnic Bay, with many locals and tourists missing a ferry from having just “one more beer”! When the last ferry departed from the Picnic Bay Jetty in 2004, for the new terminal at the Nelly Bay Marina, the pub continued on its merry way, that is, until a certain lady named “Yasi” blew into Maggie, and this Category 5 cyclone ripped through Picnic Bay and the rest of the island..

While it may have ripped into the hotel’s “bricks and mortar”, it didn't touch its heart and soul, and the family decided to pick up the pieces and rebuild.
Utilising raw timber from fallen trees and recycled materials from the pub, out of the rubble was borne The Water Garden Oasis, a first-class events and conference venue, with lush tropical gardens and spectacular water feature..

The R&R was next in line for a major redevelopment, and the day after Melbourne Cup 2012 (our biggest event of the year), the process of transforming the restaurant began.
