Nel cuore più antico della città, si trova questa poderosa opera di ingegneria medievale unica nel suo genere, dichiarata agli inizi del secolo scorso monumento nazionale.
Costituito da volte poggianti su un unico pilastro centrale rostrato, secondo il Vasari ad opera di Bernardo Rossellino, congiungeva e congiunge tuttora le due sponde del fiume Giano, a destra Castelvecchio e Poggio e a sinistra l'ampio Borgo che allora si andava formando.
Il nome Aèra deriverebbe secondo il Sassi dall'errata pronuncia della parola latina aera= metalli, sul ponte sarebbe infatti esistita, menzionata anche negli antichi statuti del Comune, l'officina di un fabbro, forse lo stesso leggendario Mastro Marino che compare nello stemma comunale.
