Colin Bryan Prep (every Tue.
during school days)+ Sacrament of Reconciliation (by appointment) Immigration of Cuban tobacco farmers, at the turn of the century, to the Colbeck area, engendered the presence of the Roman Catholic Church.
Mass was celebrated in the thatched houses of the farmers by a Fr.
Mulry who would also bless the fields of tobacco..
.
It is believed that during the tenure of Bishop Collins, a wooden building, at Main and Patrick Streets - Sacred Heart Church - was erected on land given by one Mr.
Palomino, free of debt in 1910..
.
As a mission of St.
Josephs Spanish Town, Fr.
H.
Jackmauh was the first priest to conduct weekly Sunday Masses.
When Sacred Heart was elevated to parish status in 1972, Fr.
(later Monsignor) Colin Bryan was its first Pastor..
.
A new church building was constructed and dedicated by the late Archbishop Samuel Carter, on lands donated by Mr.
(later Deacon) Juan Pablo Bunting in 1977.
This extensive property at Stelton Drive accommodates the Church and the Monsignor Colin Bryan Preparatory School..
.
Deacon Juan Pablo Bunting died on January 12, 1993.
Monsignor Colin Bryan died on July 12, 1995.
.
The history of Sacred Heart Old Harbour is replete with the names of many kind benefactors and stalwart workers who have, in several ways, contributed to the development of our community.
We must apologize for any omissions as it would be impossible to recall the several names and to make an exhaustive list.
Special mention must be made of significant funding by the German Institution - Adveniat..
.
What’s Been Happening Since 1995?.
.
Stelton Drive is a well used but little known roadway running through the community of Ainsley Lodge, near to the town's ice factory west of the clock, beyond the town's only gas station.
Since the passing of Monsignor Colin Bryan, of blessed memory, who was assigned as the first pastor of Sacred Heart church parish in 1972, "the road has been rocky".
But with prayer and thanksgiving we are seeing fruits of the harvest being borne in our community..
.
The mantle of leadership of the Sacred Heart Church community was carried on by Deacon Bernard Bonnick who had been assigned to the parish previous to the passing of Monsignor Colin Bryan in 1995, and in 1997, the school which Monsignor started in 1988 “Sacred Heart Basic” was renamed in his honour to “Monsignor Colin Bryan Preparatory”.
Deacon Bonnick's service ended in October 2003 when he and his wife Carol migrated to the United States..
.
During the years 1995 - 2003, while we did not have a resident priest, various priests would come to celebrate Mass with us.
Of special mention are Frs.
Richard Leary C.P.
and Frank Ryan S.J., who in the latter part, became a regular part of our liturgical celebrations..
.
Then, in January 2004 our community was shepherded by Rev.
Fr.
Gregory Eboh of St.
Joseph, Spanish Town, who was assisted by Deacons Lloyd and Maurice Saunders..
.
In October 2005 we were assigned our own Parish priest once again in the person of Rev.
Fr.
Elmer Empinado, a missionary priest from the Phillipines.
As the Lord would have it, he was only with us for six months when he had to return to his homeland due to ill health.
Still our faith community did not give up hope that we would once again have a parish priest.
.
.
In July 2006 Deacon Peter Espeut accompanied by his wife Velia, was assigned to the Parish as Administrator.
Shortly thereafter, the valiant efforts of the Rt.
Rev.
Monsignor Richard Albert who was appointed Episcopal Vicar of the newly formed Vicariate of St.
Catherine, in 2003, resulted in the arrival of three missionary sisters in August and a parish priest in October 2006, respectively.
.
.
Srs.
Paz Albao dm, Maria Lourdes Gavarra (MaLou) dm, and Sonia Lacorte dm, came to us from a congregation that honours the motherhood of Mary to the Church; the 'Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church' in the Philippines, and their presence created history as they were the first community of nuns to serve the Catholic Church in Old Harbour..
.
Rev.
Fr.
Mario Abad, also from the Phillipines, who came in 2006, was reassigned to us from St.
Francis Xavier, Christian Pen.
His Tenure ended June 2008.
But the Lord has not left us stranded; He continues to provide for His people in Old Harbour..
.
As at June 2008, we sincerely thank our great God for the service of the REV.
FR.
HAROLD D.
FUNA, also a Filipino Missionary Priest, and who should be with us at least until 2011! We'll see what the Lord of the Harvest has in store for us after that!.
.
In the meantime, contemplate our growth! Personally, as a Church Community, and as the Body of Christ in Old Harbour, despite our turbulent experiences.
Like the people of Israel who were exiled twice, and wandering for forty years, the Lord always provided them with Priests, Prophets and Kings to sustain them.
His provision can only get better!.
.
Even through the devastation of hurricane Dean in 2007, God has led us to serve our brothers and sisters in Old Harbour Bay and the environs of Old Harbour.
We have even submitted a candidate for the Deaconate programme 2006 - 2009, Mr.
David Chambers, who, God's willing, will become the second deacon from the Sacred Heart, Old Harbour community - the first being Deacon Juan Pablo Bunting of blessed memory, whose generosity gave us this beautiful space in which to worship the Lord and offer quality education to primary age children.
Let us pray that the Lord of the Harvest will continue to strengthen and guide David as he prepares himself for the ministry of service..
.
As we look again to the Lord of the Harvest during our annual Harvest Brunch and Family Fun day for bounteous blessings, guidance and a whole lot of LOVE, we should especially thank Him for His many graces and mercies to us… Let us offer ourselves to His service as He enables us with what we need to be true to ourselves, serve our families - each other - our country - and all His people..
.
