The Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies was established in the year 1973 and upgraded as a first class Institute by the Government of Tamilnadu in the year 1978.
It was functioning as a Government Department till 7-10-1987.
Subsequently it was converted as a Society under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 and started functioning as an autonomous body with effect from 8-10-1987.

The Institute is run by a high level committee constituted by the Government of Tamilnadu, called Governing Committee under the Charimanship of Honourable Minister for Labour.
