Al pertenecer Tepito a la Colonia Morelos y debido al incremento del comercio a diferentes calles del centro histórico cercanas al barrio de Tepito, su demarcación es constantemente confundida.HistoriaEl origen de Tepito se remonta a la fundación de México con el surgimiento de islotes y solares nativos fundacionales.
Su nombre se fue conformando fonéticamente hasta concretarse en el barrio más emblemático de la Ciudad de México.Diversas figuras académicas han querido interpretar el origen de la palabra Tepito, comparándola con vocablos nahuatlatos como Tepitón, Tepiyotl, Tepitoyotl, Tecualtepitón, etcétera.
Hasta que Gutierre Tibón tras años de investigación, encontró que el nombre indígena de la isla de Pascua es Te Pito "el ombligo del mundo" haciendo alusión a esa cicatriz del nacimiento que marca el centro del cuerpo humano.También cuenta una crónica de la colonia la historia de dos serenos (guardianes del orden, de la época) que, como siempre se ha sabido es un área "brava", un sereno le comenta a otro, -cualquier cosa que pase- yo desde aquí te pito! ya que llevaban un silbato y el nombre popular de ese aparato en México se le denomina "pito"En pocas palabras el barrio de Tepito representa la fuerza, bravura y resistencia, contenidas en la Ordenanza de Cuauhtemotzin, promulgada la tarde del 13 de agosto de 1521, justamente donde fue su última trinchera de lucha durante 93 días, en lo que es hoy el cruce de Constancia y Tenochtitlan.
