Фактически не является собором, так как епископ Евангелической Земельной Церкви Вюртемберга, которой принадлежит здание, держит свою резиденцию в Штутгарте.Собор был заложен в 1377 году, а в 1392 году началось его строительство под руководством Ульриха фон Энсингена.
В 1405 году основная часть собора была завершена, и он был освящён, однако затем строительство приостановилось из-за того, что боковые нефы не выдерживали тяжести сводов.
В 1530—1543, после перехода храма к лютеранам, строительство возобновилось, и шпиль башни достиг высоты в 100 м, однако затем из-за финансовых проблем достройка была прекращена.
В 1817—1890 собор был полностью завершён.
17 декабря 1944 церковь почти не пострадала от бомбардировки, разрушившей большую часть исторического центра города.Сооружение является самым высоким собором в мире.
