When he met alibi. Late afternoon and the Office of the Acme Insurance Company I telephone rings on the desk of Mr Atwood the. Acme insurance not up speaking haven t yet pressed have expressed. I like church policy Yes Mr President I ve been having trouble raising money for the previous. Kind of I guess well I sent you a final notice sometime last week. What will happen if I kept the paper I have today I m afraid the policy will have to lapse Mr President I have yet another word you want to ensure that today what time what time is now by 45 I have until midnight in the previous That s right but if anything happened to me before I mean I ll show you still the knowledge that yes sir. That s all I wanted to know just a moment Mr President. That if it happened Mr President Mr President. Congratulations Albert out of the what did all this happen anyway last night Katie the bartenders were just having their regular monthly meeting and they elected me Oh but I am a question I still think the reason so many people and then here s the good they like to hear him and jettison played up the ball you ve got a point there like my sister and I says quote eat drink and be merry because tomorrow you don t have to work that as if it s Saturday night. But you know let you know I know at the level that you re not on the program colognes with the guy and I pull up a stool and I let you have a case you got a job by where what s up man got killed over to knock out shot in the head with a gun without that so I thought Captain doesn t plan seem to think that I get over there right away what s the rush she caused I know you Ok d if Logan said it to what side you re going to think it s making. Fun of me but I have to tell right away for all that cash and I ve cops in this on a lot of battles airfare are you gone press commission and gentlemen of the press are turned off and you know I m a lady so I don t make it come in s.f. Thank you a lot going. Well oh boy it s awfully decent of you let me solve this case boy I don t start mastermind in case he this is a very simple job and all you have to do is take pictures murder as confessed as a murder as not confess there isn t any murder I understand this is a simple case just a website and let s keep it that way Ok Ok I didn t say anything maybe not but you re thinking Well one of us that s to thank my lucky that it was all. I don t pay any attention to him Captain he just got up on the right side of it and they won t get up in autumn are a few dozen watches come on my way to the body cap and over here behind the sofa I think for the. Lay upon him I didn t find him Casey my man found him which is right Prescott right was pressed on the hook well he was a salesman lived up to. This sort of. Watch and love what s the matter I can affect you know. What you re clodhoppers any way you want thank you and what makes you think it s suicide Oh yes the wild Prescott was found with a gun and has ended a bullet hole through his right temple how did burns on the face prove that the gun was fired at close range and then meet a suicide note that s not in the carriage of his typewriter is that enough but they didn t know that I let you speak to Mr Phillips has developed yet half of it will you please tell this gentleman that this depressed it s called you up at a quarter of 5 this afternoon that he didn t have enough money to pay the premium on his life insurance policy and that you heard him shoot himself by doing on the now wait a minute loving you can t hear a man shooting south you got to see it I was practically the same thing is different up from still on the wire when the shot was fired doesn t mean anything murder record a phony that the whole set up to make it look like suicide. If you wanted a murder to look right suicide would you kill a man while he was still on the phone got to their prognosis Oh d Ok that s divine you go to your church and I ll go to my God it s just a 2nd. Has anything in this room been moved since Prescott s body was discovered you know better and that s not gonna take man get finished and it s murder my friend goto premeditated homicide or the me I didn t telephone Logan and just say Mr Phillips I heard the shot over the wire and I did hear my nephew Mr Price get committed suicide out of the receipt I get back on the hook only one person kind of hung up that phone after price it was dead Logan and that s the matter how wait a minute I thought of that too it s just probable that press gets put it back in after he d been shot in the head but it s possible I can let it go to say Girton dropped it back into place if he fell to the floor which I surely could have played a violin concerto on the way down to where you shot it doesn t make sense Captain thank you to write about this being my dear and you know I don t know anything of the kind yet. Mr Philip tell me if you would hear the phone click after the shot was fired. But I think about it I guess I m sure I heard it s like an open receiver and life back on the bunny remembering it now how do you mean by that nothing just passing the time of day and kept him open decides to start looking just suspect Yeah but that doesn t just make the press that have any friends or relatives he s got a wife now why is she here she probably will be any minute I sent word to her just before you came in what was her reaction when you were captain I don t know I wasn t the one who broke address the fact that it sounds like you know a lot of a that s how they say soul why don t she can come in we were expecting her Yes yes you do what does that mean I don t know just you know. Even if she did tell me how to please I need not tell the man would have a job and so why are you keeping me from it why did you let me say. No no no you. Would have taken away. Those living no longer feels like you re. Having them or that these days even. You don t understand that a lot of it on anything in the world All right Carol. Sorry I know it s a shock to you. But. Today I said I had a body would what. Killed him I don t know or I m not entirely sure he was killed yes I m open Thank you might have committed suicide but that s ridiculous yet everything going for you told me so this afternoon you saw your husband this afternoon was just rescued her. Idea was why I know I m Evelyn well and I was depressed that Secretary. He walked right up to me got to ring the bell What do you like to find out some evil somebody is coming. Is Oh excuse me I thought this was Mrs Price It s apartment I have is I m hotter lane is my name why do you do Mr Lane as Mrs Preston and yes but if you re a reporter you won t stay there long Mr Lane We just want to ask a few questions Well I I appreciate it it s your job of course but really we ve been hounded by so many reporters or something I tend to come back into some of the time and state of bothering to suppress it again tonight she s been through so much I will miss the morning edition that is yes I know but couldn t I answer your questions for you after all the police have been here and the whole terrible shock of this the press gets that s all ride father you could let them in but Helen I m sure all right for. The 2 years of the tending I m not sad about Travis s death everybody knows how he treated me well and I think it s a mistake Oh Come in come in won t you let s get these press interviews over once and for all like this shock on Mrs Preston thank you Helen I I think you re giving these people the wrong what I should give keeping up appearances. All Oh but now once I can really act the way I feel you sound as if you were almost glad your husband is dead Mr Preston say that I m not glad I m not sorry that. I ve been hurt so much these past few years I m just sorta numb about it that seem very cold to you or frankly a little well maybe it is then you didn t know Travis you didn t know the pain the heartache you could bring to those who tried to love him he was a scoundrel really he was I hate to say so now but he treated Mrs Preston abominably when he was alive in what way Mr Rankin every way he drank gambled spent my daughter s money spent it on other women women like that Secretary of his oh you know about her yet she wasn t the only one. A little cool he didn t care any more about her than he did about me and she might have killed him. If she was in love with him everybody was in love with him I d have killed him including you. I wasn t in love with him well doesn t really matter very much please thank you committed suicide oh Travis not in a 1000000 years my father s right Travis wouldn t take his own life he was much too fond of living then you think that he would let it. I m sure on it by home I mean I do that s something for the police to figure out. I don t try to remember where you are after all you re the doorman here you want to know what time this is press came homosex know well I do remember but I don t know that I can fashion information about you I ve already passed along to the police but we re practically a policeman Johnny Price said Katie and what you stay off my side of the can work confusing but I m confused I know and this is Prescott game all my own when about a quarter past 5 or past 5 that s just a half hour after her husband was killed she could have done it Katie I take about 20 minutes maybe 25 at the outside if you came out that s just what I was thinking so tell me Mag if you come on a cab news I believe you did alone know what she with her father I don t know she wasn t the father Mr Lane came home at least half hour earlier about a quarter to 5 not just about maybe a few minutes before that lets him out but it doesn t make things too cozy for her well thanks for the temple man here s one for you much obliged to you Seth come on and we got work to play defense you don t have to get me off my feet well we going back to the car 1st and we re going to drive down to wait a minute let s move quick it up against a side the building got a flash that day in the lobby coming out with a new kind of suppressed she s now. Getting about where you suppose she s going keep your eye on or any you may have Taylor Ok . Getting that one for Pete s sake get pretty good we re going to follow that car why Whose is it don t you recognize the guy behind the wheel that s Mr Phillips the insurance agent. You will bust be killed if you keep driving this way don t worry any still got 2 wheels on the ground let one of the others down anyway we re coming down for a landing no stopping you said. I want of course. Everything let s go just one here we re. Down the River Street These are all office buildings we are going to grow in the curb don t get much chance to get away. Come on I ve got to find out what they re up to. Not so fast Casey has got high heels on no time to call attention to your leg or to hurry a little to Hillman Maybe we ll catch up with them we don t get a move on. Whatever they are going that started off about easy enough to kind of give us the slip. Now it looks like some sort of office on the 1st floor and. I think insurance companies. I ve got a client that works enough. So that s mighty That s all of us don t want to take a chance some form of going home across a threshold. You re on you know what but I think he did a case along with what the Japs and Robin what are you doing here minding my own business what are you doing but it is not love and don t be like that we ve been following that set up sky and they came in here a 2nd ago and just see them as I saw them I sent for them you know why I said for them is where you have it s about time you got wise to yourself alone are they in that thing together give a cook up some kind of scheme to kill Prescott collect his insurance not exactly not exactly what do you mean come on get what have you got on them just as the come down here so I could have a look at Mr press gets insurance both good boy love I stay Miss suspect number one on my list mind 2 she had motive and opportunity to commit the crime way tell me about at a quarter to 5 and have a 2nd look and I did too and she didn t get back to her apartment until one half an hour later so you figure she was rather husband at the time of it. Not as a matter of fact she was oh. Got an alibi I suppose it was that is Casey an appetite when at a quarter to 5 she was a bridge brought up to over the over a dozen witnesses so she couldn t have killed her husband. I guess not them who did and I don t know if I ve still got an idea it was suicide remember yeah I remember suicide or not Logan if you let that woman put one over on your s.f. She has everything to gain by our husband s death including that nice 5 insurance policy and the policy may be fast but it won t do her any good why not because she s not the beneficiary as the press gets left the money to Evelyn Warner or his secretary. Of the day. What you want to say but I tell you Mrs Warner if you ll just take a guess what away from the door and let us come in No please I m awfully busy right now can t you to come back another time and find you gone right now of course not what makes you think I was going anywhere don t you dare come in here why do you hide. Nothing nothing but I have packed suitcase I can see that from here all the way I waited a minute this want to come on in and I like to run. I got is but you know it s bad news to run away at a time like this practically an admission of guilt I don t care what it is you mean you killed Mr Prescott know going to what Logan tells me you were at the office with him this afternoon of course I was I was his secretary was and I was there until 4 o clock and where were you after for a quick chat and depressed to send me out on an errand and why you so anxious to get away now because I know what will happen they ll send me to the chapel something I didn t do You didn t do it you ve got nothing to worry about my school but all the evidence points to me the insurance policy the fact that I worked for me from the fact that I was in love with him as only one fact that really counts can you prove you were not with Mr Preston at a quarter to 5 this afternoon you know the only man who could do that for me won t help that Mrs Prescott s father Mr Lane you know if I wasn t at the office at a quarter to 5 it s afternoon but I never tell the police that one because he hates me and I m sure he does and a man would hate me to breaking up his daughter s marriage but he wouldn t send you to the chair for. Besides Mr Lane doesn t strike me as the kind of a guy would blame you but what have you would I know what I can t take a check you can t take a chance because you killed Travis press now we re going to have a hard time convincing him back hey we re not doing it with I ve got a gun hand back both of you I know how do you we could and I will let you get in my way don t be an idiot you can t get away with this we ll see about that because my bag I can. Now put it on the floor and stand back. Up to walk out of here with that gun in your hand I m not asking your advice Mr Casey just don t move a muscle till I m out 5 a door. And just the way you think I don t know you don t know that. Let me get this one I was just about to ring your bell almost I ll take care that you got it because you know what. Thank you miss one or 2 might hurt somebody but I think what s the matter here what if she don t quite big Mr Lane mitered your son in law and tried to make it look like suicide just gave us a cock and bull story about you being able to fix her up with an alibi I don t understand Mr President at a quarter to play bridge afternoon that s right and how could Miss Warner. But I mean well Miss Warner drops a mail up for me at the apartment this afternoon I was with her at almost exactly quarter. That s the 1st portion of Casey crime photographer more after these words. I give up as far as I can make out nobody was that most depressed Scott s office water or 5 of us after well. But that s got nothing and I m beginning to wonder if he was alive he d probably have an alibi too. Maybe Doesn t was right maybe it was suicide. And they begin to look that way. And there s something awful facie about that phone call 1 you think Mr Phillips is lying I don t know that plenty of witnesses from his office. Might have an assumption and again that the other end of the line. That s about it that s for me you know what s available right change you know me. Oh Blue Note and filberts thanking God that I faxed by the way I have to get. Quick turn on the white school I want him down I. Think I will see who murdered Travis Prescott s Mr Lane So I ll write this case and I will try to get away go ahead and call the police. Ok Mr Lane. So you killed your son in law is I had every reason in the world for killing him after the way treated my daughter he he didn t deserve to live. I made up my mind to kill him when he tried to borrow money from me to meet his insurance pop a pop policy policy that would only benefit that s that Secretary if you shot price gets you went back to your apartment and called up just to fill up the insurance man you would present it your son in law s voice and while his death Phillips was still on the wire you fired a shot for him to get over the phone is I try to make it look as if Prescott had died at a quarter to play because I was already at home at that time but the perfect alibi when did you kill Prescott mistily at exactly 25 minutes and before. I gave you a perfect alibi All right the only trouble is it gave everybody else one too. Ok Any call up load. You see I thought it was a perfect alibi I don t see how it s perfect for that guy got caught let me live in kind. I don t know about that any Logan was on it I d call sheet long before I was yet a photostatic copy of it the whole time I need to see. If this language I had followed you to the hotel and made that pass in the dark he demanded not necessarily. Love it was playing the whole thing cozy letting it pass for a suicide and keeping an eye on all the suspects all this. Life I am a. Fancy why not. See what happened to this line.
