But tonight, i am told advisers to the former president say a chief objective is to try and paint her as a San Francisco liberal as weve seen him, tried to do in Television Ads and also tie her to the biden administration on inflation on immigration, on the economy, on crime and other matters the Harris Campaign has been intensely preparing for this moment. The Vice President , im told, has been watching all of those hours of old debate tapes. No one has debated more than Donald Trump in a general election setting tonight will be his seventh. Shes been watching all of those talking with Hillary Clinton, talking with Joe Biden. Well, in addition to what we have reported before that, Donald Trump has held these Policy Sessions to try and focus on immigration, on the economy, on crime, and also pivoting away from to fix issues like abortion to talk about those three issues, i outlined the issues his campaign believes are core to his success in november and his success tonight. In addition to that, one of the things that we are told that the campaign has focused on is the optics of this they are trying to mimic the results of what We Saw when it was Donald Trump up against president Joe Biden down to the optics, that means the podium is in the exact same location that it means that Donald Trump will be on the same side of the stage. It means that theyve had a team here in place for over a week who have been looking for every single detail to breathe the former president on before he arrives. Obviously, the president himself is known for his fixation on objects and that has gone down to his entire team, who even spent the daytoday measuring the podiums themselves, the distance its between podiums, the angles, noticing where every single camera was going to be. Again, these are things they think that will help him in this Debate And Something that they believe helped him in the last debate focusing on those Facial Expressions. Now one of the things i was told when it comes to Facial Expressions is theyve been prepping Donald Trump on not reacting, or at least not verbally reacting to any kind of goading from Kamala Harris. They believe that theres going to be an attempt by the Vice President to get on under Donald Trumps skin. He obviously is notoriously reactive. In fact, allies have told me that they would rather him respond. Theyve told him this as well with Facial Expressions rather than any verbal attacks, any kind of personal insults. And that is something we have heard from republicans across the board. They believed Donald Trump can do a good Job Tonight if he stays focused and just talks about the issues, but wolf but as we have seen, time and time again, it is unclear even with any amount of preparation, which Donald Trump is going to show up on that stage tonight, there is only one person who can say who, whos going to be there . If she were to target who she needs to win over, who are they . Thats right. So when you look at Donald Trumps voters, most of them, almost all of them liked Donald Trump. And if youre somebody out there who likes Donald Trump, youre voting for him, period. But there is about 7 of Donald Trumps vote that says, i dont like the guy. I know feel favorably toward him, but they like his policies for them Kamala Harris needs to come out tonight and give them an excuse to say, you know what, maybe i dont have to vote for the guy i dont like. But in order to do that, she has to make a very strong and persuasive case, not just that she is more moderate than 2019. Kamala harris on a bunch of policy issues, but also that she is not just going to carry on the biden agenda that these voters also dont necessarily like. All right, so bakari, its unclear whether shell do that, but if she tries to and of walk that Line And Nod towards moderation on some issues, whether it be immigration or fracking, right . I mean, obviously thats going to come up tonight the question is how she does it here is how she has handled questions before when given the opportunity. I think a lot of americans have been waiting for a long period of time for her to get on stage with Donald Trump. Shes going to prove him to be a 78yearold diminished man. I think shes going to die how many, how the media covers its Something Else, but shes going to be good tonight. But do you think she can she can dominate i mean, so far this situation that trump has been in over these past couple of months, its been the first time that people have really seen him on his back feet at times. I think shes not have a good start, but faking it is hard to do and shes trying to fake a centrism that she doesnt believe she told us what she would believe when she ran in 2020, her campaign was very intentional. She took every liberal position possible from decriminalizing Border Border crossings to getting rid of Gasoline Cars and trucks are going to sic so i think Shell Shell start out strong on her prepared talking points, but if she can get thrown off off her game, thats where well see the real comprehensive again, the Harris Campaign just released a an Ad Today hours before the debate going after what they are trying to, the contrast theyre trying to set up, which is old versus new here or there . If you can lets be there for 90 minutes and answer questions, put forward a thoughtful rational agenda, which so far weve not seen Donald Trump be able to do even that event they did in front of bedminster with the groceries behind him that prompts were right there and he couldnt stay on message. And i think the Challenge Tonight for for Donald Trump will be the not talk about Crowd Size, but actually to see if he can try to stay on point at what Minute Mark or do you start to get really stressed every time he opens his mouth from i guess trust when i wake up every morning to see if a tweet came out, it has nothing to do with what hes saying. I get stressed before i come on television to see you. The tweet coming. But i would lets say this, you know, i think the challenge for President Trump is a lot less than it is for harris. People know and people have already decided whether hes offensive or whether it matters like you said, its only 7 of the voters who liked his trumps policies, but are offended by his behavior. I think this debate is primarily about Kamala Harris. And if trump can concisely finish the picture, this is a San Francisco liberal. You see that in the New York Times poll, you see that in the Cnn Poll in a San Francisco has liberals or values outside of the mainstream of america, and they are in the more and more you go into those details to more and more it showed, especially in pennsylvania, she wants to do a mandatory gun buyback program. Pennsylvania is not is a proud second Amendment State they have some pockets where obviously theyre not that, but that is outside the mainstream that, that San Francisco values outside the mainstream of pennsylvania its astonishing to listen to this because what you are hearing is that Kamala Harris has this huge bar to rise to. Shes like the Ginger Rogers of candidates just to do it backwards and heels while youre just saying Donald Trump has to basically show up and appear normal and so, you know, already there is these two different expectations that i think we dont really discuss in the way that we should Kamala Harris has a lot to prove. Of course, this has been a short runway for her, but she has been Vice President for three me and a half years. Donald trump is constantly saying that shes stupid, that shes, you know, all these different types of literally hes you, he said literally hes apparently worse than private. The New York Times has reported and so what i think needs to happen here is that this is not just a testament of policies. This is also a testament of who has the character. And i think thats what she has to run on because poll after poll shows that if that is the playing field, she wins. If you play on his playing field, its going to be one, then theres the optics, right when you talk about dominating, right . Youre talking about intellectually and in the substance. But then theres also the optics here, which is that hes six foot three ish he said six, but okay. So okay i dont want to talk i tell you what taller than she is the podiums are closed. There is a height difference. You know, when you layer that on top of all these other issues, does that matter . It does matter. And one of the things that ive that ive said, this may be very superficial, but people pay attention to it when youre talking about things like strength is, you know, be sure that you dont Shake Hands. Like i dont want her that close to the President Of The United States because although sheet her presence is huge, shes just not tall and staff, you think that that image doesnt. Of course, i mean, people pay attention to that. His Facial Expressions, right . You know, hes going to be been out of shape when she actually hits him with a jab or said something thats amenable. Thats meaningful. And also the mics are huge. As you said it, the mics are huge because hes going to mumble all types of and you are right as well. All types of obscenities about are calling her all types of names under his breath, whether or not its audible or not is going to be there. So those things matter. But at the end of the day, shes going to come out and exude that strength and shes going to look stunning in new. And hes going to look 78yearsold when Donald Trump, thats absolutely the other dynamic that trump has to be wary of is to not repeat what he did at nabj when Lindsey Davis is asking him, fair . They want him focused on the issue shes but i will tell you if i had spoken to a number of trump allies of republicans who are deeply concerned that Donald Trump is going to devolve into personal attacks against Kamala Harris. And Thats Something his team has warned him against. Do they believe that she was going to try and get under his Skin Something that we have seen is not that difficult to do. They want him not really reacting to that, but only talking about policy, talking about the issues. But will again, as we have seen, time and time before, no matter what level of preparation Donald Trump has before he gets on that stage, one, if she is able to get under his skin, it is likely we will see him react. He is notoriously reacted, but two, we dont know what version of Donald Trump is going to show up tonight. They have urged him to maintain the same in posture he did during that first debate against president Joe Biden. However again what kind of Donald Trump, what version of him shows up tonight is only up to one person that is trump himself we will find out fairly soon at Kristen Holmes reporting for us kristen, thank you very much. He is not a Discipline Candidate and that kind of worked for him in 2016 because people could sort of kept waiting for this pivot will now we know the pivot that is not coming. But voters have already accepted the things they dont like about Donald Trump. They, a lot of them dont even know the things. They dont like about Kamala Harris yet. She is further left than and the american electorate. Shes much further left than the people are going to decide the election of pennsylvania, North Carolina, and nevada states like that. Donald trumps challenges that ideology is not as favorite thing. Trump at one point said that floridas sixweek ban was too much, right . That he he thought that was too draconian then he backtracked. Im curious, governor, how you see this . I know you have a near total Abortion Ban in your state. So are you worried that if Tonight Trump feels that he needs to talk to moderates, that he needs to move more to the center on abortion, that he could alienate some of the core republican voters watching hi erin, great to be with you and not know were not worried about that at all. President trump has been very clear that this is an issue that should be left the states. Shes been unequivocal about saying that he would not support a not sign a federal Abortion Ban . And he also understands that across our country that some states are have more conservative and other states less conservative views about this issue. Im also proud to be the most prolife president in american history he said, im very prochoice. Any said in the most prolife president , governor, im curious because you do know well, you spent a lot of time with him, you or maybe even potentially going to be the vp do you know how he personally feels about abortion well, i think what is important is how he feels about it from a Policy Standpoint and like i said, hes been super clear that he is now support any kind of federal ban and thats why he was supporting returning it back to the states. And i think as president , if people have got surgeons about reproductive rights he supports ivf, he supports fertility treatments, he supports all as you supports exceptions for life and health, mother for rape and incest. So his position is the moderate position on this one. And yet i know oh, that conservatives still support him because in a conservative state is left up to the people in that state. So but wow, how he feels about this as a voter in florida is very different than him as the policymaker and hes been very clear on his policy. I want to ask you about j. D. Vance, that hes im sure youre aware there was this viral story about undocumented haitian immigrants eating cats and ducks and geese and pets in springfield, ohio. And he had tweeted about this and now hes saying that this could all this could potentially be false. So governor just everyone understand yesterday he said reports show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldnt be in this country. Wheres our borders are and here at cnn, we then fact che it spokesperson for the city of springfield, ohio said that they hadnt received any reports of any such abduction options or eating of pets. But now today he says, well, maybe its not true im curious, governor you know, putting aside the nittygritty of whether someone did or did not abducted pet to get to the substance of this, does it frustrate you that vance may have said something that was untrue. Hes admitting that now. It may not be true. Does that take away from the legitimate issues on immigration well, no, i think the issues on immigration or so important to our whole country because its just undeniable well, it doesnt matter whether youre a republican independent democrat, where you stand on this issue. So as kasie said, selfdefeating, trump is famously selfdefeating with women voters there is a reason we all know the phrase nasty woman or nasty women because he has used it so many times. But the first thing i would tell him to do regardless of whatever may have been negotiated in the rules walk across that stage and extend a hand.
