He spoke at an event hosted by a cio affiliate. Heres a look at the president s remarks. [cheering] [cheering] hello. Hello. Hello. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Hello, philadelphia. Thank you for that introduction. I learned women can do anything a man can do where i come from. [laughter] [cheering] because all the women in my family are smarter than i am. It is good to be almost home. I would not have been elected to the United States senate in the first place if it were not for philadelphia and that is no joke before i began, i have a lot of friends to think. Ryan, thank you. I dont know where he is standing. I know that he is here. Danny appeared president of the central labor council. And gary must see no president of sheet Metal Workers. Thank you for hosting us today. By the way, i think maybe the for worst sentence in the english language is the president is coming. Nothing but a lot of work. She could not be here today because she is celebrating labor day in detroit, but i want to thank liz schuller. A great friend and fearless leader and a great partner. And so many current and former elected officials here today. All friends of mine. Governor schapiro and senator federman could not be here today because they p were splitting te state. They were taking pittsburgh and im taking philly. [cheering and applause] along with a few friends. By the way, mayor kenny is here. Were you able to come . There he is. Under the american flag. Good to see you, mr. Mayor. Im sorry keep bugging you all the time. He and i talk more than i think we talked to our staff. Thank you, mr. Mayor. [inaudible] [laughter] i tell you what, someone said, you know, that biden is getting old. I tell you what appeared guess what, the only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom. I have been doing this longer than anybody and guess what, im going to continue to do it with your help. Look, one of my friends in my hometown, from scranton, pennsylvania, you know, representative dwight evans and brendan boyles in mary scanlon, a great friend as well. Look, former member charlene parker. I know that i saw her. I was going to see you first. You want to come up here and do this old buddy. I told you i would have your back if i ran for president , and i have appeared a lot of politicians in this country that do not know how to say the word union. They dont say union. It is union. I am proud to say union. I am proud to be the most pro union president. By the way, i make no bones about that. Let me tell you what we are celebrating. We are celebrating jobs. Good paying jobs. Jobs you can raise a family on. Union jobs. [cheering and applause] my dad used to have an expression. Joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. For real. It is about your dignity. It is about respect. It is about knowing its okay in meaning it when you say appeared i am determined to make that a reality for every family in this country. Nearly 13,500,000 jobs just since you got me sworn in january of 2020. [applause] 800,000 new manufacturing jobs. But you would not know it from all the negative news that you thear. Getting through one of the greatest job creation. In american history. For real. That is a n fact. It was not that long ago we were losing jobs in this country. The guy that held this job before me was just one of two president s in history, there is an important point, leaving office with fewer jobs in america than when he got elected office. By the way, you know who the other one was, herbert hoover. Isnt that kind of coincidental. Look, we are turning things around because of you appeared when the last guy was here, your shipping jobs to china. Now we are bringing jobs home from china. When the last guy was here, your pensions were at risk. We helped save millions of enpensions, with your help. In the last guy was here, he looked at the world from park avenue. I look at it from scranton pennsylvania. I look at it from delaware. Not a joke. Folks, all my time in public office, i guess that they thought it was not very complementary. Guess what, that is who i am. It does not mean you are not sophisticated. And you know hell your family has to work like hell to be able to make it appeared i know who built this country. Ive been saying it since i ran the first time. Let me say it loud and clear. Wall street did not build america, the middle class would america built america and the union built middleclass. That is a fact. Unions built the middle class. I see folks in my neighborhood. People with physical courage. People who busted their next their whole lives to care for their families. People who got up every day and work like the devil to pay the taxes and volunteer in their communities. Two modest. You dont talk enough about what you have to do. I tell you, leaders all the time american junior workers are the best. I know every major head of state in the world. Not a joke. Its because ive been around and they look to america for foreignpolicy issues. Guess what. I make the point. America has the best workers in the world. That is a fact. [cheering and applause] you guys out to talk about it more. It can take fourfive years to train as an apprentice. Going back to college, jobs constantly changing and technology evolved. You have to keep stepping up. You have to get more training. You cant be the worst in the world, youre the best in the world. I really mean it. Like the sheet Metal Workers that used to use handdrawn blueprints to design ductwork and buildings. Now sophisticated computeraided Design Systems of the entire project can be laid out in 3 d. It aint your father sheet Metal Workers. This is in a different world. You do the job right and you do it on l time and you cost less r the guy you are doing it for. People starting to understand. I met with the business roundtable. The big corporate america. And i said, they said, why are you so prolabor . I said why dont you understand why i am prolabor. [laughter] no, i amic serious. I spoke with 364 i think it was ceos of fortune 500 companies. We asked them, what do you most need . You know what they said, a better educated workforce. What are you doing about it . You are fighting everything we are doing. The Democratic Party making People Better educated. Why are you doing it . Guess what, now the sudden you dont seeee them going after you nearly as t much. They know they need you. The supports is higher today thn anytime and nearly 60 years. I continue to call on congress to fully and finally pass the proactive which makes it easier. So Many Companies are still trying to prevent organizations. The bill is named after one of the greatest leaders and labor ive ever worked with. Guess what, we will get it passed come hell or high water. Folks, my plan for the country is to make the economy work for people like you appeared when it works for people like you, it works for everybody. Like i said, in my first two years ive created nearly 13. 5 million jobs. More jobs in two years and any president has created in a fouryear term. More. 800,000 new manufacturing jobs. Where is it written . Where is it written that america will not leave the world lead the world in manufacturing . I dont see it written anywhere because we are leading the world unemployment below 4 for the longest stretch and 50 years. Recovered all of the jobs lost during the pandemic. We have added millions more. People are coming off the sidelines to go to work. Within 700,000 people joined the labor force last month which means higher share of working. Age americans now in the workforce in any time in the last 20 years. Job satisfaction is higher than its been in 36 years. Unemployment is down. Inflation is down. To get inflation down, we need to we need to get inflation under control. You need to lower wages and higher unemployment. Not on my watch. That is right. The answer was to lay people off and pay them less but i never thought the problem was too many people working or working people making too much money. I have never seen that problem. We have to do more to put inflation down. One third of what it was a year ago. The lowest point in two years. Wages going faster than inflation. This did not just happen. To gather, we made it happen. Decades of handing out excessive tax cuts. Without making investments in america. It had been a bust. All done to hollow out the middle class. Blow up the deficit. Shift jobs overseas. Shutting down the factories and sending it overseas because labor was cheaper and we imported a more expensive product. Well, guess what, im pretty sure you saw my so in your home what i saw in mind. Not a lot of trickle down. Replacing trickledown economics bidenomics. [cheering and applause] guess what, it is working. Middle out in the bottom up not the top down. This is not a political statement. This is an economic statement. When the middle class does well, everyone does well. [cheering and applause] i am a capitalist. The poor does well and you can still be a millionaire billionaire except for one thing , pay your taxes. Pay your taxes. Bidenomics is a bluecollar blueprint for america. It is for you appeared last week we announced a new proposal. A new rule that would extend overtime pay to as many as 3,600,000 workers. Now it is about 36 grand. After that you dont get overtime. Now it is 53 grand. Guess what, you have a whole lot of people working as executive assistants working a hell of a lot more than 40 hours and not getting overtime. Now you are going to get paid overtime. [cheering and applause] making a big difference foror a lot of families. We did Something Else that mattered a whole lot to folks in this parking lot. As we passed the bush lewis act which protected pensions for million of union workers. One of the most significant achievements in over 50 years. For the folks at home who do not know why it matters, let me explain. Two3 Million Union workers to no fault of their own after paying in their pension for years face painful cuts and benefits. Why . They are going to let time drive companies they worked for did not hold up their end of the bargain and financed their into the bargain. Just could not let that happen. A single solitary republican vote. Not one voted to sustain these pensions. People worked their whole life. Think about it, though. Why would they do that . Can you imagine if it was worse. They came along i dont even want to get going. Democrats passed it. It is hard work. It is also passing the bipartisan infrastructure law. You cannot have the strongest economy in the world. Not with the second rate infrastructure. Can you believe lease have the best infrastructure in the world and then we felt the number 13 in the world. Thirteen. The United States of america, 13th in the world. Guess what, guess what, the great real estate builder, the last guy here, he did not build a dam thing. Under my predecessor, infrastructure week became a punchline. On my watch, infrastructure a decade and a headline. [cheering and applause] we are investing in america. Roads, bridges, airports, highspeed internet and so much more. Over 10 billion has already been committed to the state of pennsylvania. [cheering and applause] they have alreadyd announced 78 million going to make improvements along the road. The bucks county line including upgrades and traffic signals, installing new transit and bike paths, pedestriann paths, upgrading the airports right here in philly. You got it, 95, i got it, man. I got it. We are finally going to get that rail line from scranton to new york. I am going to get that done. You think im joking. Im not joking. It is a big deal. Economically, it will be a big deal. Guess who will build these projects. You are labor. [applause] union labor. Sheet Metal Workers, electricians. Look, we are creating good paying prevailing wages jobs. We do not need a College Degree to make a decent income, we have to work hard to get a College Degree. By the way, we will transition to an electric vehicle future made in america. It will be made in america. That protects and expands Good Union Jobs. Auto manufacturing has been a large middleclass career with good pay that you could raise a family on. That is not going to change on my watch. Look, one of the Core Principles is this. Make it in america with american products, with american labor. Most people do not know theres been a federal law on the books and 20 years ago i did not know it either, to be honest with you night teen 33. The law says when Congress Appropriates money for the president to administer, whether it iser for an aircraft carrierr federal highway, the president is supposed to hire American Workers and use only american products. Guess what, for too t long, too many president s did not have the nerve to insist on it. Well, i am insisting on it. [applause] when i took office i was determined that we never again be in a position where during the pandemic supply chains broke down, American Companies could not get the parts and products they needed. I waso determined t to bring the supply chains home to invest in america. Guess what, and that is encouraging the private sector to do the same. Since i took office, the private companies are investing their money, 510 billion invested in america. Creating jobs. Instead of sending it overseas. For example, i met with the chairman of one of the largest Semi Conductor manufacturers in the world. By the way, we invented the Semi Conductor. They are investing 22 billion in america building facilities to make these chips here in america. When i asked why, why america. He said,no number one, there iso safer place in the world to have my investment than in the United States of america. Number two, this is the gods truth, you have the best workers in the world. [applause] he was right on both counts. Making things here in america again with American Workers, american products, and american factories. For too long weow have been exporting jobs. Pennsylvania all through the big west or communities and generations having worked in a particular factory that shipped overseas because labor was cheaper. Depriving that county in that city of pride sending jobs overseas and importing finished products overseas. We are not doing that anymore. We are creating Good Union Jobs and exporting good Union Products to the rest of the world. We are bringing back pride get scores of cities across america. I believe america is willing to work hard and you should be able to get a job no matter where you live in the heartland, small towns, big cities. Keep roots where you grew up. My first two years all of this stuff, guess what, they cut the deficit 1. 7 trillion. [cheering and applause] cut the debt 1. 7 trillion. G]one more thing, one of the was i was able to invest in you and still breakdown the deficit was i started making people pay their fair share. You may remember hearing me say this, 55 largest corporations in america paid zero and federal taxesg making 40 billion. They paid zero. Well, guess what, it is not fair i changed it. Now they are paying a minimum of 15 paying for all this stuff. [applause] by the way, how many of you think the tax code is fair . You got it, man. You know the idea that over 1000 billionaires, billionaires, not million, billionaires in america , you know what they pay on average, 8 . If i had a deal, said, okay, no matter what you do you only have to pay 8 , you would take it in a heartbeat. They pay a lower rate than you, teachers, firefighters, probably anyone in this parking lot. It is time they pay at least the minimum tax. You pay enough. It is time for big corporations to pay their fair share. [applause] i made a promise when i got elected so make no mistake, no one making under 400,000, anyone making over 400 grand tier, no one dash so it could not be used saying i am raising taxes all middleclass people. I made my. Promise and i will keep it. Let me close with this. Weve paved some pretty tough times. The pandemic took more than a million of our friends and neighbors. Sons and daughters. A lot of empty chairs at christmas. A lot of empty chairs when you sit down for thanksgiving. Mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife. Generating the worst economic crisis. It was not that long ago that 20 Million People were out of work, but you did not give up. Philadelphia did not give up, america did not give up. There is no quit in america. Nine. [cheering and applause] all i hear from my friends on the other side, they keep telling us america is failing, they are wrong. I have news for them. America has the strongest economy in the world right now, today. The lowest of inflation rates. Its not because of me, although our products have helped, it is you. I mean that sincerely. Not a joke. It is the american people. Your great, your determination, you never quit. Whatever we said our mind to as a country, think about this, we never failed to accomplish. America is not failing, america is winning and the rest of the world knows it. That is where friends and allies look to us. I am proud of historic legislation my administration pass. So much of it affects you without you. One of the most significant laws ever signed for veterans. Exposed to toxic metal and their families. I have a saying, we have only one truly sacred obligation did to equip those we sent into harms way and care for them and their families when they come home and when they do not come home as well. It was part of my agenda to stay a union. How many of you here are veterans, raise your hand. A lot of veterans here. An obligation is sacred. We have gotten our economy going again to build our future. Eathe real hero in this story is you. The american people, the people of philadelphia, working people of this country. You are the ones getting up every day going out the door doing the work. We still believe in honesty and decency. We are still a country. Arbelieving in everyone gettinga fair shot. Every one of us is created equal we are still the beacon of a free world, not a joke. Rural america suburbs, big cities across the country, every ordinary people do the most extraordinary things. Let me tell you, americas best days are ahead of us. Ahead of us, not behind us. It is about the future. I can honestly say, i have been doing this a long while, but ive never been more optimistic about americas future. We are the United States of america. There is nothing, nothing beyond our capacity if we Work Together god bless you all and may god protect our troops. You are the best. You are the best. You really are the best.
