United Nations
. This event is about 45 minutes. Ambassadors, a left, and distinguished guest and that includes everyone, we welcome you to the anniversary of the signing of the
United Nations
charter here and wonderful
San Francisco
. [applause] we think the pacific boys chorus for a wonderful start. [applause] and secretarygeneral, we welcome you to california and we hope you remember when you were a teenager and that was not so long ago, right, that you were a n
Exchange Student
in the nearby del gotto. That was not subject long time ago. We are happy to have you back. [applause] we like to recognize the ambassadors from around the world better ambassadors to the
United Nations
. May i ask you to stand please . [applause] we in
San Francisco
would like to acknowledge our partnership with the
United Nations
for the celebration of the 70 and 70th anniversary and we welcome the chairman and founder of the
United Nations
Foundation Ted
turner. Ted, are you here . [applause] all right. You know, you could have had your americas cup on
San Francisco
bay. Its not too late. You know, everyone here, especially those on the stage know a celebration like this cannot be held without the support of
Wonderful Community
leaders. If i may, i would like to recognize them. Brain chesky and the airbnb community, michael dell, kaiser permanente, nancy fund, bill plus golf pulaskov, and tom stier. Thank you for your support. [applause] through the 70 years, we have had many celebrations in
San Francisco
to celebrate those 70 years in
San Francisco
of the signing of the charter. People ask, they say why was it in
San Francisco
. We say why not. So goes the story that president roosevelt, soviet leader stalin, and
Prime Minister
churchill were in a discussion to decide where this meeting should take place but did not come up with any answers. Geneva . That passed by. However, there was a day that roosevelts secretary of state had a vision he had a vision, and in his diary he recalls wakening in the office on the morning of the boring night, 1945 and writing, and i quote i saw the
Golden Sunshine
and as i lay there on the shores of the black sea in the crimea i could almost feel that fresh and invigorating air from the pacific. He suddenly imagined
San Francisco
as the ideal spot for the gathering. It was after all equal distance between asia europe, and latin america, perfectly positioned for a world get together. Roosevelt also liked the idea to emphasize the importance of winning the pacific war. I am sure that most people have a vision of
San Francisco
who come here, maybe for not as stately reasons, but they do choose to come here. Well, they came here, and the matriarch of one of the big gold rush families, ms. Is flawed, graciously mrs. Flood graciously gave up her rome, and then on june 25, a germanic session took place a dramatic session took place in the opera house, which most of you know is right behind us. Lord halifax was presiding. He said this is such an incredible occasion. Instead of saying yay or in aea or nay, we will stand. And they stood. A very strong standing ovation that was unprecedented because it was unanimous that the
United Nations
charter would be in session and would be passed. The next day on june 26, 50 nations went to our war memorial building, which is right behind us which is being restored and will be opened in september. 50 people signed the charter and it was presided over by president truman, and president truman said,
United Nations
charter is a solid structure upon which we can build a better world. We are proud in
San Francisco
that the
United Nations
was created in
San Francisco
, an
International City
where we celebrate diversity. I would like to introduce the landlord. Have we paid our bill question mark ok. Mayor lee was not here 70 years ago like some of the people here. [laughter] and there. Willie brown. At that time, the mayor, mayor lee, his parents were immigrants from china and lived in seattle. His father fought in world war ii. As a teenager he was a delegate to the
National Model
u. N. Today he he has pursued strong leadership. May i present the mayor of the city and counselcil of
San Francisco
, mayor ed lee . [applause] mayor lee thank you, charlotte. Isnt charlotte the most wonderful chief of protocol we have ever had . Thank you. Thank you, charlotte. Before i say welcome, i must tell you that every time i see
Willie Browns
face here at city hall and i look around, these moments, these historical occasions, i am reminded he led the effort to restore our city hall to make sure we had a worldclass place for worldclass events. Thank you, mayor willie brown for that. Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to city hall. Welcome to the peoples palace. The charter of the
United Nations
was signed on june 26, 1945, as charlotte said, right here in
San Francisco
. A place of peace equality, acceptance, and tolerance for all people, and we are proud of our citys role. At long last,
Marriage Equality
in these
United States
. [applause] we started that movement. We started that movement right here in
San Francisco
when then mayor gavin newsom dared to mary loving samesex couples right here nearly a decade ago and took the civil rights issue of our generation to the highest court in our country and now the city leads the way in the lgbt movement, because we are dedicated to quality for all equality for all equality without exception. [applause] there is always, always room for equality. We are once again changing the world. These are
San Francisco
values and these are now values touted around the world. From the wars, the aids crisis the. Com boom the dotcom boom, and now the housing crisis, the story of
San Francisco
is a story of growth. Rapid spurts of growth. A story of industry that brought new waves of people all seeking a better life. More than most places this is always represented. With our foundation we have an opportunity to change the city for the better, to make the city of
San Francisco
supportable for families and make sure that everyone shares in our citys rising prosperity. As usual, it was dr. King who said it best. Many have come on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now. [applause] because hope and opportunity after all, are really at the heart of this idea of
San Francisco
. Many of us came from somewhere else or their parents before them. Whether it was what a lahar, county cork guadalajara
San Francisco
offered opportunities for a better life. We are changing opportunities once again when all lives matter and we are a beacon in a world too often torn apart by differences. We celebrate their differences. We just dont tolerate it. As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the
United Nations
charter and because of the secretarygenerals goal to end all forms of discrimination and ensure each and every member of the human family can enjoy their fundamental human rights i am pleased to present his excellency ban kimoon with our citys highest honor, the key to our city. [applause] secretarygeneral ban it is a great honor. [applause] mayor lee i am so delighted that he is joined today by his american mother, mrs. Patterson, as well. He will explain that in a minute. [applause] on behalf of the city and county of
San Francisco
i look forward to continuing our work with the
United Nations
in ensuring freedom and equality for everyone without exception. Now it is my great pleasure to introduce someone that everybody here knows and has done such a fantastic job, the great governor of our state of california, the honorable jerry brown. [applause]
Governor Brown
thank you mayor. It is great to be here. I cannot help but note i came your first on june 8 and 1944, and i sat here and watched my father sworn in as
District Attorney
of
San Francisco
. So, i go back 72 years [laughter]
Governor Brown
to celebrate this great day. The
United Nations
is such an amazing idea and its declaration of human rights, what an unimaginable id of the time. Eleanor roosevelt was instrumental in making that happen. In those years when the countries of russia and china and america, all of these other major countries got together, after all of the killing and suffering of the holocaust to enshrine this hope, the
United Nations
,
United Nations
committed to the universal declaration of rights. What a wonderful thing and we are not your we are not there yet. But he gives me hope that something that was completely unimaginable when this
United Nations
charter was adopted here in
San Francisco
, that is
Marriage Equality
has become a reality. So, i think we can take great comfort and hope from the fact that something people did not even conceive all conceive of some many decades ago has become a reality by the
United States
Supreme Court
all over this country. Marriage equality, the right that samesex couples have, recognized by the highest court in the land. Who would have thought that, even five years ago . But it happened. It happened [applause] and so, it is never time to give into cynicism or despair or belief that things cannot happen. Things can happen and the
United Nations
can fulfill its dream of a world of peace, a world where
Nuclear Weapons
are destroyed instead of built up. So a great opportunity to renew our hope in the impossible dream, because we saw the impossible dream become the reality of today, and now we have to then believe in doing everything we can to make sure the
United Nations
can do everything it can to make our mandate. Now let me introduce someone who has been in the forefront of making all of these things happen in the congress, our leader of
San Francisco
, our leader of the democrats, and hopefully the leader of the entire congress as soon as possible, nancy pelosi, my good friend [applause] and fellow i will not say fellow immigrant to
San Francisco
, like everyone else on this stage. Secretarygeneral ban representative pelosi thank you very much,
Governor Brown
. On behalf of the congress of the
United States
, it is my privilege to bring greetings to those gathered here on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the creation of the
United Nations
. Many more of my colleagues would be here, but at this moment they are accompanying president obama to charleston,
South Carolina
to help people there as we mourn the loss that was suffered this past week in that community. And we do that sitting here in this city hall, a place that has been the scene of a hate crime too. Over 37 years ago. And that is why it makes the
Supreme Court
decision today all the more momentous and spectacular for all of us here and as mr. King said, the art of justice bins slowly the arc of history bends slowly, but it bins toward justice. What a great morning we have had to erase some of the sorrow we have been carrying. [applause] i am very honored to welcome the secretarygeneral, to join in welcoming the secretarygeneral to the city of
San Francisco
and the city hall. We have the conference of mayors here last week and mariyor lee has been at the forefront of championing all of the issues at the u. N. And particularly where they established their priority of working for people in a planet friendly way. Thank you mayor lee, for your leadership. And to be introduced by jerry brown is an honor. When he was governor the first time, he was saying things that people are only saying today about the economy and the environment. A leader in the world on the subject of climate and human rights and environmental justice. They all go together. I want to knowledge the presence of kathy calvin. Thank you for your leadership. I want to say of willie brown, yes, he had the civic dream and he came to the congress with the money to get it done. Thank you for your leadership willie. And we do want to acknowledge how proud we are of our ambassador to the
United Nations
. [applause] the secretarygeneral honors us with his presence, but he honors us doubly by having mrs. Von be there mrs. Ban be there with him. [applause] thank you. To all of you, thank you for being here today. We are gathered in commemoration and celebration of one of the great moments of history, a great moment in history for the world, a great moment for the history of our country, a great moment for our city. The delegates of 15 nations gathered in the
San Francisco
opera house to open a new era for humanity. Here in
San Francisco
, the hope of president wilson, the vision of president roosevelt, the compliment of president truman were all fulfilled. He said, if you want to do something right, do it in
San Francisco
. Here in
San Francisco
diplomats find their way through poetic dreams from a distant century. On this date in 1945, the city the word went forward. We the people of the
United Nations
have come together in a new union to promote freedom and advance
Human Dignity
to combat disease, hunger, and poverty to read the world in the olive branches of peace to wreath the world and the olive branches of peace. How happy would they be . I am going to depart for a moment, as we say in the congress. Earlier i heard the secretary general reference a meeting he had with president kennedy and i want to tell you my connection to the u. N. When i was a teenager in the 1950s, i father was the mayor of baltimore. I was in high school and i was a member of something called
United Nations
youth. And then senator kennedy who was hoping to be president , came to baltimore to speak at a dinner, the
United Nations
association of maryland honoring a big supporter of the u. N. My mother said she was sick. I will never know, but she said you can take my place at the dinner, knowing how much i admired senator kennedy. So, i had the privilege of sitting next to him. He was the featured speaker at the dinner, sitting next to him, and hearing his words of encouragement to view the world globally and encouraging young people to do that. It was something, of course, i will never forget and this is the best place i could tell that story of some many years ago. [applause] it wasnt long after that he became president and at the u. N. , before the u. N. General assembly he spoke of the need for global perspective and action. He said, the hazards of nature and the hunger of children are foes of every nation. The earth and the air can be the concern of every nation and science, technology, and education can be the allies of every nation. The truth of president kennedys word speaks across a generation. True today. Seven decades after its founding, the
United Nations
and the ideals of the charter that dices continues to inspire continues to challenge its member nations to answer our responsibilities to fellow human beings. Under the leadership of secretarygeneral ban kimoon, with his entrepreneurial spirit and fresh eyes on every subject in so many arenas, the
United Nations
has played a leadership role. Thank you, secretarygeneral for your leadership in the promotion of peace. Thank you especially mr. Secretarygeneral here in
San Francisco
, for driving
International Mobilization
against hiv and aids. [applause] in advancing human rights and empowering women and girls, he has been a leader, recognizing the scale and urgency of the climate crisis, he has given it passions leadership to the cause. It is my great pleasure to introduce the leader of this great gathering, a man dedicated to advancing peace promoting sustainability, and upholding the ideas of the founders who came together in this great city of

United Nations today. And thank you very much again. I would like to express my special gratitude to the governor and mayor of the great state of california, the center of diversity and innovation. In fact,
San Francisco is not just about the place of the
United Nations. For me personally, it was the place where my passion, my passion as a young boy to be a
Global Citizen was born. My passion was born in 1962. I came to the
United Nations to the
United States as part of a
Student Group sponsored by the
American Red Cross society. I was just 18 years old at the time. Our trip began right here in an francisco in the a area. It was my first ever foreign trip. The man to stand it was my eyeopening to the world. I was hosted by a wonderful family, the pattersons. The pattersons are here with us. [applause] she is now 97 years old. What an admirable lady. Thank you very much. She is my american mom. Thank you. [applause] ladies and gentlemen the charter was a glorious gamble. Delegates from different countries. So much was lost in the trenches and the gas chambers of two world wars in the space of just one generation, but they dared to believe in something bigger than person or country. For two months they turned
San Franciscos were memorial into a piece palace. More than 2000 men women took part. One of them was a
High School Senior at the time. She was a spanish translator and had everyone speak the universal language of peace. I am pleased she was the first u. N. Staff that is still here with us. Ms. Newman, thank you very much for joining us here today. [applause] the delegations, they worked against a backdrop of monumental use. That child, the victory in europe, but victory in
San Francisco was never assured. Today, we take the idea of the
United Nations for granted but bring it to life required huge amounts of statecraft. The delegates realize their dream. They knew it was not just to rebuild broken societies with bricks and mortar, but with ideas and values. With the adoption of the
United Nations charter, a world in rubble, found a path to renewal. Ladies and gentlemen i was born just months before the
United Nations was born, but it did not take long for it to change my world for good. I lost my home, my village, my school. Everything was destroyed or burned, but help came bringing the
United Nations flag. Help came from unicef, sacks of grain and textbooks from unesco and many young soldiers from 16
Member States and five more countries who sent their medical teams. The representatives of those countries are participating in this and i thank you for your sacrifice and some were at the time and support at the time. I would not have been able to stand as the secretarygeneral now without the help of the
United Nations. That was the first peacekeeping mission of the
United Nations since the birth of the
United Nations. The
United Nations showed we were not alone. And today, when i travel to refugee camps and conflict areas around the world, i tell young old, refugees and displaced persons, dont despair. You are not alone. The
United Nations stands with you. I made it and you can, too. This is what i am sending, the messages to many helpless and unfortunate young people around the world. That is my mission and our mission of the
United Nations. Every day the
United Nations feeds the hungry shelters refugees. 60 million refugees now. More than 60 of children. Every day we defend human rights , regardless of race, gender, religion nationality and sexual orientation. [applause] in that regard, the decision of the
Supreme Court of the
United States paves the way for gay and lesbian americans to have their relationship legally recognized come no matter what state they are living in, and that is a great step forward for human rights in the
United States and i joined the
Lgbt Community and celebrating this historic decision. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, the
United Nations [indiscernible] bringing freedom to millions of people. Our peacekeepers are on the front lines of war. We bring values to the table of these. Yet, tragedy has been with us every step of the way. Genocide war, a thousand daily indignities. It affects far too many people especially women. Conflict has forced many to flee their homes more than any time since the second world war. Forces of division, the false promise of isolation in the recently in an increasingly interdependent world. Ladies and gentlemen, 70 years ago this a la newman was a young student. Today we are honored to be joined by malala. Malala you are a torchbearer for the
United Nations and for a new generation. Thank you for reminding us of that. We have work ahead. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, i would tell you why we have big work ahead. In september,
World Leaders including president obama will come to the
United Nations special session and they will adopt a huge agenda to end global poverty. In december, the
International Community has committed to reach a bold
Climate Change agreement to put the world on more sustainable footing. This is a once in a generation opportunity. This is our
San Francisco moment. We can make these things happen. Distinguished guests on the podium, ladies and gentlemen in signing the
United Nations charter, the founders achieved what no one thought was possible. [indiscernible] and to use their creation, the
United Nations, for the common good. The
United Nations is a hope and the home of all humankind. The charter is our compact. Never let us relent on the journey for better world for we the peoples. Let us go to work to better to make the world better for all the people. Thank you very much. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, the secretarygeneral will now present the
United Nations charter to the delegates from the future, three young delegates from the bay area, [reading names] the u. N. Charter essential 70 years ago, today, and 70 years from now. These welcome them. Please welcome them. [applause] charlotte thank you, mr. Secretary general. We are all, im sure, i hoping for peace and praying for peace around the world. So we welcome you here today and we look forward to you being here on the 75th anniversary of the
United Nations charter signed in our beautiful
San Francisco. Thank you very much for being here. [applause] each week,
American History tvs reel america brings you
Public Affairs films that tell the story of the 20th century. [bells chiming] narrator in 1849, it took the clipper ship flying cloud 89 days to reach
San Franciscos golden gate harbor from new york. In the spring of 1945 no point on earth was more than 40 flying hours away from
San Francisco. In those 100 years,
San Francisco grew larger and the world grew smaller. It developed into a vigorous and cause my politicians center of culture and industry and shipping for the war in the pacific. And 49 weeks, in the spring of 1945,
San Francisco for 9 weeks, in the spring of 1945
San Francisco was the center of mans hopes for peace. Delegates representing 46 nations came to
San Francisco in 1945. Representing more than 80 of humanity. All at war when the conference began, they came with hope for their common struggle. They came to design together machinery to end war, a curse which in 30 years had killed 40 million human beings. Maimed countless millions more both armed and unarmed. When the conference convened
Franklin Roosevelt was missing. The man who helped well to the
United Nations together as a team and worked to keep them united had died before he could see his dream come true. But his words were in every mind and heart. 25 years ago, the
American Fighting men look to the statesman of the world to work for peace for which they fought and suffered. We failed them. We failed them then. We cannot fail them again and expect the world to survive again. Van dyke president truman, roosevelt friend and successor opened the conference by radio from washington. President truman delegates to
United Nations conference on international organization, it is not the purpose of this conference to draft a treaty of peace in the old sense of that term. This conference will devote its labors exclusively to the single problem of setting up the essential organization to keep the peace. You are to write the fundamental charter. Van dyke as the delegates broke up that first night, the task before them was clear to chart the course toward realistic
International Cooperation to preserve peace. This was the responsibility vested in them by a warweary world. It was for this they had gathered. At the invitation of the governments of china great britain, the ussr and the
United States. This was the step made possible by dunkirk and stalingrad and normandy and midway. Plan for at casablanca cair o, moscow,
Dumbarton Oaks and ya lta. Delegates from 46 and later 50 nations were there but there in spirit too, were the victims of warsaw coventry, coventry, shanghai. The hopes of the living and the dead were concentrated in the hands of the representatives meeting at
San Francisco. Together, they organized a huge problem ahead of them. The discussion and amendment of the proposals prepared at
Dumbarton Oaks. Each nation was represented on all four commissions, setup to work out the general provisions of the
United Nations charter and the actual structure of the
General Assembly,
Security Council, and judicial organizations. These committees were divided into smaller working groups, 12 in all. Chinese, english russian french and spanish were the standard means of exchange among many languages spoken. And in 9 weeks the charter was ready to go before the purchase of hitting governments for ratification g go before the participating governments in the ratification. Each member will have one vote. Any matters within the scope of the charter will be discussed here. Recommendations will be made to the
Security Council. The
Security Council will have five permanent members and six others elected by the general is simply for two years. It is to be the enforcement arm of the organization. An
International Court of justice and permanent in permanent session will decide legal aspects of international disputes. The economic and social council will have 18 members, elected by the
General Assembly. Special agencies like the food and
Agricultural Organization will be affiliated with it. The
Trusteeship Council for the advancement of territories held in trust will be part of the
General Assembly. It will be equally divided between those nations which administer trust territories and those which do not. There will be a secretary to do the administrative work of the organization. These provisions were not easily arise at. Arrived at. They were hammered out of debate, stressed and contracted by compromise. The result is a constitution which is at the same time an expression of high ideals and the practical measures. To be effective, the charter needs the active cooperation of people everywhere. The same efforts and understanding that went into the writing of the charter will be needed to make it a working instrument. To fulfill the mutual responsibilities of nations as set forth in the charter, to bring about free world trade and the full employment of mans productive resources, men and women of goodwill everywhere have come to know and understand one another. In this charter, humanity has declared its united purpose to work towards those economic goals. The social and
Economic Council of the
United Nations organization gives the peoples of the world and instrument with which to promote a higher standard of living everywhere. Through their delegates at
San Francisco, the member nations pledged to use that instrument. They pledged, too, to stimulate the exchange of culture among peoples and in the words of the charter to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors. At
San Francisco 50
United Nations reaffirmed their faith in the dignity and worth of the human person, without distinction as to race, sex language, or religion. The representatives of 2,000
Million People pledged to promote freedom from fear and freedom of expression, freedom from want and freedom of worship. The second week of the conference brought the news of germanys surrender proof of the power of unity against a common enemy. But in their wake, the germans left horror and devastation, a specter of fascism in the price of total war which would hot civilization for decades to come. Strong and effective machinery must guarantee that succeeding generations shall be spared such destruction. Therefore, at
San Francisco, the delegates of the
United Nations took concrete steps to settle their disputes by peaceful means to prevent threats to the peace to suppress aggression, and pledged to place their armed forces at the disposal of the international organization. For speedy combined action, air forces will be held immediately available. Final responsibility is vested in the powerful
Security Council, authorized to work swiftly and effectively with the aid of its military staff committee. This machinery was not designed without disagreement and dispute. But the final blueprint had the unanimous approval of the participating delegates. And it is now my duty, my honor and my privilege in the chair to vote and the approval of the charter of the
United Nations. Itncluding the
International Court. And also, of the agreement on interim arrangements. If i have your attention, may i invite the leaders of delegations who are in favor of the approval of the charter and the statues and the agreement on interim arrangements to rise in their places and be good enough to remain standing while they are counted . [applause] van dyke this was a peoples conference responsible to the conscience of the world. Here in the midst of war the world people collaborated in the drafting of a workable international constitution. It was a conference to write a peoples charter, opening with the words we, the people of the
United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind. It was a peoples conference and the soldiers conference. Meeting under the eyes of veterans of two wars and the generation which must suffer if the constitution fails. Common people and their governments alike were aware of the stakes. There are many who doubted an agreement could ever be reached by these disparate countries differing so much in race and religion and language and culture. But these differences were all forgotten in one unshakeable unity of determination to find a way to end war. [applause] van dyke this charter points the way, but whether the world is to move in that direction will depend finally upon the vigilance and sovereign will of the peoples of the world. Three men and a woman believed to be members of a puerto rican nationalist gang that attempted the assassination of president truman opened fire from the visitors gallery of the house of representatives. Five congressmen were hit. Clifford davis of tennessee
Kenneth Roberts of alabama, george of maryland, and
Elbert Bentley of michigan, who was seriously injured. The gun wielders into the accomplices goes the evil distention of having perpetrated a criminal outrage almost unique in americas history. It was one of the most violent acts that occurred in the chamber. And there were debates right after that. We cant let this happen again. What we need to do is wall off the visitors gallery with bulletproof glass. So that could never happen again. The more the members talked about that and thought about it, they said, no that is a bad idea. This is the peoples house, the people cannot be walled off for what is going on. The
