The Texas Senate approved a name, image and likeness bill on Thursday, the
Dallas Morning News report. That means Texas athletes would be able to profit off the careers they build while on the Forty Acres. The bill would go into effect on Sept. 1.
From the
Morning News: “For years, the push for NIL bills felt as seasonal as talks about Texas seceding. ... California started a domino effect by passing its own NIL legislation in 2019. Other states followed, and the NCAA lost its control to legislatures in the process. Now Texas is striving to keep up with states including Florida, California and most recently Alabama that have already passed NIL bills. In a state where sports, especially football, reign supreme, state lawmakers know that failing to pass this bill could result in more of Texas’ top talent heading to other states that have an NIL law.”
