Ailing GMC Liberty Tree to be cut down


The health of the Liberty Tree has been declining for several years. The tree was planted on Nov. 11, 1921, during an Armistice Day celebration.
One year shy of the century mark from when it was planted, the historic Liberty Tree on the Georgia Military College Milledgeville campus is slated to be felled during the GMC winter break. GMC has plans to plant a replacement tree sometime in 2021.
The health of the Liberty Tree has been declining for several years. The majority of the willow oak’s branches are lifeless and have required regular pruning by GMC Engineering. To prevent potential hazards caused by the aging tree, a decision was made to remove it.
