We have breaking news out of san jose. Police say a man died at the hospital after getting stabbed on north king road. Just after 5 00 a. M. The san jose homicide unit has not released the victims name. The motive isnt known yet. Officers are at the scene investigating. New developments in a random shooting that killed a woman at the San Francisco water front this week. This man 45yearold Francisco Sanchez confessed to killing 32yearold kate steinly. He has an extensive criminal history and has been deported to mexico multiple times. This tragic killing is calling into question San Franciscos immigration policies. Here is vic lee with more. Reporter flowers mark the spot where catherine steinly was fatally shot wednesday evening. Divers from this police boat found a gun off the waters of the pier. Investigators believe it was used by Francisco Sanchez who was caught later that night not far from the shooting and charged with steinlys murder. Sanchez is on probation in texas. He has a long rap sheet with seven felonies. Sources say hes been arrested not only in texas but oregon and washington. Hes also been deported to mexico five times. In fact i. C. E. Had him in custody in march but turned him over to the Sheriffs Office when they discovered he had an outstanding drug warrant here. The d. A. s Office Dropped the case which dated back to 1990s. The Sheriffs Office subsequently released sanchez. In a written statement, i. C. E. Lodged an immigration detainer, requesting notification prior to his release to take him into custody again. The detainer was not honored. City supervisors two years ago approved policy which would prohibit local Law Enforcement from complying with federal detainers unless the person was convicted of a violent felony or other crimes. He was in custody again on a similar offense. Sheriff carved out an even stricter policy which in almost all cases would require i. C. E. To go to court. A court order or jude rigs order for review were issued we would honor that order or warrant there were none in this case. I. C. E. Wanted the courtesy being told sanchez was going to be released. I have a little solace i was with her but i also have the overwhelming grief of a father the moment she was shot. Reporter her parents called her case a young woman who had a playful personality and often at the center of a group of friends. She never ventured far from her connection to family. Judge, she would leave here to go home she would text and say im home okay. For a 32yearold, thats the joy a family is. Reporter they are not ready to forgive the suspect but they dont want to blame anyone after learning he was not handed over to immigration agents by the Sheriffs Department even after being deported five times. They dont want a similar situation to happen again. Hopefully it may be a legacy for kate because of this it wont happen to someone elses daughter. A beautiful kind young woman. An ambulance took one person to a local hospital a rescue helicopter was sent to airlift a second person. Right now their conditions arent known. The campground was not evacuated after the incident. A novato track coach went from vacations straight to jail. He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17yearold girl he coached. Text messages led to the arrest. Police picked him up thursday at Oakland International airport after he got off a plane with his wife. He is out on bail and has been ordered not to contact the teen. Firefighters are warning you to steer clear of illegal fireworks for the fourth. Yesterday abc 7 news was on monterey street in gilroy where you have to prove you live in the city to buy fireworks. The socalled safe and sane ones that dont leave the ground or explode can only be used in certain areas. A 50acre fire south of gilroy tuesday is a reminder of the high fire dang they are year. The city prohibits the use of safe and sane fireworks adjacent to wild land areas. They asked to take it to the beach. No you are not allowed to take them outside city limits. The Fire Department says flames started on the patio of a second floor unit on east san fernando street and south third street around 2 00 a. M. This morning. Nobody was hurt and firefighters were able to douse the flames in about 30 minutes. Tonight people from all over will gather in San Francisco waiting for the biggest Fireworks Show of the year. It was a month in the making and as Jonathan Bloom found out it puts the tech in pyro technics. There is a same wooden racks. The same plastic tubes. What are you doing with these tubes . He started the San Francisco fireworks way back when. In those days they use steel mortars buried to keep them upright. They stand there to reload them and light them by hand. Some of our shows will be fired with the flare. This is one of the higher end shows fired with a computerbased firing system. It keeps the fireworks in perfect time with the music. And keeps the technicians a safe distance away. Stand behind the pillar or inside the cockpit then you are safe. Being computerized doesnt mean the show is easy to set up. There are 10,000 fireworks that need to be carefully unpacked, loaded into the right tubes and wired to go off. Each firework has a number and name. 34a. The round part is where all the sparkles are. This is where the lift charge is. This is where the gun powder sits in there. Each one a little different. These are tracers. They are the tails going up or they whistle. And safety always comes first. Later well spoil them so if burning debris somehow falls in this tube it doesnt light the tree. Its a lot of work for a show that lasts 25 minutes.
